Why do we give scholarships

[3]
Posted: Jan 18, 2019 11:02 PM

To coaches kids? They can afford to pay their own way thus opening up more scholarships for more highly sought after recruits. Or is this against the rules?

What else would New Spring so with all their money?

Sign more players

I’m not trying to be contrarian like most on here. The coaches could afford to pay their own way. Wouldn’t you love to have a few more 4 or 5 star players

I think they're doing fine

and if giving their kids an earned scholarship keeps the coaches around, more power to them.

If that is Dabo’s motivation, more power to him!! Something seems to be working! I hadn’t thought about it that way. Think about it this way though. What if CBV needed a 5 star recruit, but we were already at 85. I only started this topic seriously asking if it was legal for coaches to pay for their kids tuition to free up scholarship space

2019 orange level member

We are literally NEVER going to turn away a 5-star kid

Posted: Jan 19, 2019 11:19 AM

that the staff likes and wants to sign. They will always keep a spot open for kids like that. I can pretty much guarantee you that we've never missed on a 5-star kid due to lack of scholarships.

We don't, the coaches do, because they're their kids.

Posted: Jan 18, 2019 11:19 PM

And they do because they can.

Re: We don't, the coaches do, because they're their kids.

Ok! Don’t you think said coaches would rather have better players? I love everything Clemson. Just seriously asking, couldn’t they pay their own way and make room for higher quality players?

Scholarships are awarded based on talent and potential regardless of who they are related to. Playing time is rewarded based on performance. I like the way Dabo does it.

I guess that means we shouldn't have allowed Adam Humphfries and Hunter Renfrow walk-on and be awarded a scholarship?

Seriously the way I see it is this: a scholarship is a stamp of really belonging and given because it was felt to be deserved. Our coaches are dads too who are proud of their sons and want them to excel as much as anyone. I don’t think we can ever sign any players who are more valuable than our current coaches. Keeping them happy is well worth it. We’d be foolish not to.

for Bama and UGA. A team needs role players and glue guys in the meeting rooms too. Not all 4 or 5 stars fit within our culture. Kind of like the New England Patriots. They seem to get it done without as much "star power" too.

Absolutely right. Not all 4 and 5 star players are Clemson material. I’m sure there are some that Dabo doesn’t want regardless of their star rating. But there are some we are missing on occasionally. I just wish seomsone would answer my original question. Is it legal for coaches to pay for their kids tuition to allow for scholarship space?

Re: all those 4 and 5 stars seem to be working really well

Posted: Jan 19, 2019 12:03 AM

it is legal. One big part of a serious athletic program (i.e. Clemson) is an ethics and rules review system.

Beyond that, there are 4 bazillion reporters, coots and trolls that would love to uncover Dabo and crew 'paying' anybody to play. We're not going to uncover a major scholarship scandal on the message boards.

and like it was said over and over, 4 and 5 star kids are not guaranteed a spot on the team. They get rejected (by Dabo and crew) more often that you'd believe.

I absolutely believe Dabo turns away players no matter their stars. And I think he does it often. I wasn’t trying to start a fuss or start a recruiting scam. Was just asking something that was on my mind. I seriously didn’t know the answer about coaches kids and scholarships. Another question. Now if we land Ealy and he plays both football and baseball. It will count towards the 85 football scholarships and not baseball, right?

Nah. Because what they do seems to be working just fine. And if you stack a few more four and five star players here and there then somebody’s playing time gets reduced and that opens the door for transfers because those kids want to play and be starters and only 11 get to on each side of the ball. Remember when we stock piled QB’s not long ago? You just can’t keep that much talent on one team and make everybody happy. And those kids playing here just adds to the whole family atmosphere. Kids stay close to home, coaches wives are happier cause their kids are right there and it works for everybody. If mamas happy, everybody’s happy. I know it looks better on signing day but when it comes to playing actual football it just doesn’t work that way. You gotta have the walk-ons and 2 and 3 star kids on your team.

Thanks for your response without the attack. I really think the reason “little ol Clemson” keeps getting the big recruits is because they know they will play regardless of who is ahead of them. Granted , this does not work at the qb position. Only one football to go around. Even though we had an all world d line, plenty of other players saw meaningful snaps. All 4 running backs had many meaning touches. Winning national championships helps greatly, but like you said kids wanna play. And recruits see Dabo plays a lot of players to build depth.

It is absolutely legal for coaches to pay their kids way in school and have them a walk-on. I understand where your question is coming from. I see the argument on both sides. On one hand, the two Dabo boys, BV kid Jake and Ben Batson are on the team. Will Sweeney, Jake and Ben are on scholarship. Dabo's middle son is a walk-on. Will came in as a true freshman and took the holder position. Do I think he works as hard as anyone and is an excellent holder ?? Absolutely. Do I think he would have been given that opportunity if he wasn't Dabo's son ?? No, I do not. Do I think there are 20-30 guys on the roster that have worked just as hard and have been there longer that could do just as good of a job ?? Yes i do. BUT.... we preach "family", and I believe clemson is about the only place that actually is a family. How can anyone question what Dabo has done and what he has built.

If you want to look at it in another way, same thing happened with Jeff Scott when he was a freshman under Bowden in 1999 when Brad Scott was the coach. he was the holder from the get go (after a red shirt year). Did he do an excellent job ?? yes he did. That is life though... sometimes you get an opportunity b/c who your dad is. It happens in life, in careers and it happens on the college football field. And it worked out well. Let the coaches coach... trust in them and enjoy the ride. As much as I hate to admit it, this isn't going to last forever. At some point (probably 10-20 years from now), we won't win the Natty, and at some point, we won't make the CFP. And eventually, probably not in my lifetime, we will lose one game to the Coots. And at some point, Dabo will pass the reins to another coach. Enjoy these times my friends... at the end of the day, its just a game. As Dabo says, "Serve the player's heart and not their talent and football will take care of itself". Whatever our record is at the end of the year, I am proud of the culture Dabo has built, and he has his priorities straight. Couldn't have a better man leading young men in football and in life. Go Tigers !!!

And on Ealy or anyone who plays football and another sport, the scholarship is alway eaten by the football team b/c they have 85 scholarships. That frees up a scholarship for the baseball, track, or whatever other sport the athlete plays.

And with so much coaching turnover and negative recruiting about coaches leaving, what better way to prove to recruits that you aren't going anywhere and you love the place you are coaching by having your children enrolled and on the team ?? Way I see it, no way BV or Dabo leaves while they have a child on the team. Batson is another story.... I still can't believe he is still the strength coach. He has been the strength coach at Clemson since 1996 through West, Bowden and Dabo. That blows my mind everyday that he managed to adapt to a Tommy West offense (I formation, 2 TE) to Bowden's no huddle, no TEs and just keep on keeping on. If there is a strength coach HOF, Batson will have a statue at the entrance.

"Power Hour" is a registered trademark of Joey Batson, Inc.... Go Tigers !!!

"They don't put rings on smooth hands" - Joey Batson

"Championships are won when nobody's looking" - Joey Batson & Terry Jolly came up with that together eating lunch one day at Pepino's.

In Aug 2018 (for the 18-19 school year), Will Sweeney, Darien Rencher, Hall Morton and Austin Spence were awarded scholarships for the season.

There are always scholarships to play with due to transfers and early NFL exits.

It was Brooks or Hobby that once said, our 1st and 2nd team players are equally good, and somebody has to start, so we start the guy that practiced better that week in practice. Coaches really don't like saying 1 player is better than another at the same position unless they are a lot better, and then they will get the coaches praise and should....

We don't "give" scholarships to any player. They "earn" them. Even coaches kids earn them.

What makes you so sure they didn't earn a scholarship?

[1]
Posted: Jan 19, 2019 1:15 AM

Did Swinney's sons get offers out of HS? Or just Venables' son?

In the case of Venables I think that kid had other scholarship offers. If he earned an offer with his play, then it's not an issue.

Sometimes when there are extra schollies available the staff will give them to the most deserving walk-on. Did Will Swinney get one of those? In this case it's a reward for good work.

People on this board are always assuming that a 2* or 3* with any connections, either to the staff or other highly rated players we are recruiting, are receiving gifts. Evidence has shown over and over that this board is full of manure when it comes to this topic.

I would hire a professional writer and send a formal letter

It is really not about the money. Scholarship players get a whole lot of perts. They get a lot of extras and special treatment that non scholarship players do not enjoy. It is also a prestige thing that they can brag about for the rest of their lives.

For Jake V, he was a blue chip recruit. In his eyes, why should mom and dad pay his tuition when he earned a football scholarship through his talent. Most guys don't want to live off mom and dad when they start becoming men.

Because our coaches are family.

Honoring their offspring with a scholarship is just one of the loving things Clemson does for our coaches which makes them all turn down offers from other schools.

I don't particularly believe you're stupid but I think perhaps you are short sighted when it comes to questioning Dabo. Most Clemson fans learned years ago that Dabo has a reason for everything he does. Why you and some few others haven't figured that out yet is beyond me.

Next time perhaps, when you come up with another one of your revolutionary genius concepts to make Clemson better by pointing out Dabo's mistakes perhaps, just perhaps you'll compare your salary to his. Maybe then instead of criticizing or questioning him you'll take a pause and try to think of a few reason he may have done or not done whatever is puzzling you. Maybe.

The coaches pay into state taxes and the local economy more than cover a couple of scholarships.

Dabo has this working pretty well. We did just win the NC and as someone pointed out, we are one on-side kick away from 3 NCs in the last 4 years. Schollys are given for various reasons for sure and I trust our coaches totally on this.

Re: Why do we give scholarships

It might depend on each coach's deal, but I thought kids of coaches got a free ride whether they played sports or not.

Pretty sure Bowden's kids went for free & some of Danny Ford's too.

If that WAS and IS the deal - they aren't using scholarships are they?

If what you say is true, (coaches kids get free tuition), then we shouldn’t “waste” or burn a scholarship on them.
