Why do preachers wear suits?

Jesus was homeless....99% of churches wouldn’t let him stand in the pulpit.

Most churches have a rule that the pastor and any visiting pastor wear a coat and tie.
Doesn’t seem like a big deal on the surface but I think the unspoken dress code among the congregation is a hindrance to the spread of the gospel.
What’s worse is the churches where the members and even leaders dress more casually are looked at as a new age, “feel good gospel” church that doesn’t preach the word.
I’m afraid most of our churches today are resembling first century Judaism more than anything.

At least those guys have good intentions. They are trying to connect to the secular world. Paul did say that he would become anything to further the gospel.
There's no doubt that people have reservations about going into a church because they might not be dressed properly.

You're right a lot of people will use any excuse, but I really just don't see a good reason and how dressing in clothes that only CEOs, government officials, and mob bosses wear would help the church's goal of reaching the lost....
I've heard the "bring your best to God" argument but the Bible is clear that God looks at the heart, not the way a person is dressed.

It's crazy to think how much Christianity at least in America has changed from it's humble roots. A lot of pastors make close to a six figure salary, some much more. And while I do think churches should take care of their leaders, there just seems to be way too much emphasis on appearance, which Jesus strongly spoke against.

The problem is, these mega churches are the Wal-Mart of churches, and their goal is the same as Wal-Mart: destroy all the smaller versions and steal their business for maximum profit.

It's the sacrifice involved. Not the clothes themselves
Feb 1, 2018, 10:03 AM
|
|
You have to get up on a designated "day of rest". Get three screaming kids bathed, and dress them in difficult clothes to put on. Then you have to make them look very nice and presentable. Then you and wife have to shower, shave, and put on nice clothes that are not comfortable. Then you have to change at least one set of clothes because poop, pee, or a spilled milk bottle. FINALLY, you get everyone ready and into the car and drive to church. Then you have to watch the kids like hawks and make sure they're quiet, behaved, and respectful.
When Church is done, you then drive to the grandparents house where your mother-in-law has been cooking a meal for 30 for 3 days straight. Then you eat, change the kids' clothes again from spills, and then they end up getting muddy in the yard playing with their cousins while you're washing the dishes. So they take baths and you go home. By the end of Sunday you're more tired and have done more on your day of rest than any other day of the week.
So best I can tell, it's the sacrifice involved that's important.

this is INCREDIBLY accurate.
Except, you left out the part where, after the clothes are muddy and the kids are sweaty, you have to get them ready again for the 6pm service!

I've been doing Sunday School, Morning Service, break, choir practice, evening service, Wednesday night service my entire life.
That don't include the revivals, where you go every night during the week.
