Why Clemson fans should love the portal

Jul 19, 2019, 5:54 PM

Clemson fans are looking at the portal the wrong way, IMHO.

I think - actually, I'm almost dead-certain - that it actually helps us far more than anybody else, because transfers are becoming a pandemic some places. Yes, we're losing (some) guys, but there are programs losing a half-dozen guys (or more!) a season now to this thing. Check out FSU, for instance - they've got four guys coming in (three of them QB's, Good God Almighty!) and a whopping eight going out...and it's only July; you know there's more drama in store for them once August rolls around.
https://247sports.com/college/florida-state/Season/2019-Football/TransferPortal/

Clemson, on the other hand, played an average of 75 guys a game, tops in college football. It's the tightest-knit, most inclusive, most family-oriented culture in college football...right as inclusiveness and not marginalizing your players are becoming even more important than they already were...and Dabo was beating peoples' brains out with Clemson's depth and buy-in already.

It used to be schools had all the power. Coaches could hold their players hostage once they signed on the dotted line; now if you mistreat or just neglect a guy you start losing players real fast. You have to make them want to stay.

Fortunately for Clemson, college football is proliferated by a bunch of Saban-tree coaches who take the "Factory" approach. And I'm absolutely fine with that. Clemson was built on the "Family" blueprint...and it's not like the football factories are just going to get all caring and touchy-feeley overnight; the guns running them are just not made to do that. Go on, Nick Saban: hug it out. Tell that kid you love him...and make him believe it. You can do it. <img border=">

I think the ground has actually changed substantially under everyone's feet because of that portal...and Clemson's the program (by a mile) that actually benefits the most from it. Mostly because Clemson is better than any other program at giving kids real reasons to want to stay.

Which means, I suspect, that the gap between Clemson and the Saban Factories that dominate college football is only going to grow, not narrow. We clubbed Alabama down by 28 points already and we rarely had Top-10 recruiting classes; what's going to happen now that Clemson is starting to get the super-elite guys?

My questions is, will Clemson ever go there for a player, or

Jul 19, 2019, 5:58 PM

is that just something our coaches will not do? For example, there are plenty of power five teams going after Feaster and will go after McMichael.

We sure could use a tightend and maybe a linebacker. Are there just not any up to our standards in there, or is our philosophy to just not go there?

Dabo said he's prefer not to but certain situations may force his hand. So he's leaving that door open.

I don't know. My suspicion is that Clemson won't delve into the portal unless there's an emergency because continuity of culture is so important, but it'll be fascinating to see going forward how Dabo treats it.

There is absolutely nobody coming in for us, not a surprise. I was actually surprised to see there were five guys in the portal for us; I'd forgotten about Shadell Bell and Richard Yeargin.

Of course, Alabama is losing eight guys themselves. Combine that with their usual massive early defections to the NFL and Alabama's attrition is starting to become an ever-growing issue for them:

As long as the players that leave Clemson do it because they got over recruited I think it's okay. Hopefully it frees up scholarships that will be used on a recruit that is better than at least our worst at other positions.

Lots of truth in Quozzel's post.

The unfortunate aspect of the portal seems likely to be how it impacts impatient young players, many of whom expected near instant, easy success, as they defined success when they were stars in high school.

BTW, Clemson should do exactly what our philosopher coach says do. If he prefers high school recruits over jucos and transfers, that's the way I want to go.

EDIT: Holy crap. I just checked out the Gamecocks. They have 10 guys in the portal!

https://247sports.com/college/south-carolina/Season/2019-Football/TransferPortal/

I knew Muschamp had him some high turnover - I think his second year he brought in 39 new guys between oversignings and transfers - but it hasn't slowed down for him either.

That ain't...good.

quozzel Post of the Day! Maybe post of the week(it would be if I had a vote).
Love everything you typed. I agree 100% Clemson and Coach Swinney and staff are ahead of the game when it comes to: "inclusiveness and fostering a family environment"!

The competition is stiff but - if guys want to win - they will continue coming to Clemson. Plus, their H.S. coach is telling them - if they care about the kid - this staff will do right by you as a player and as a young man!

The NCAA announced a week or so ago; they were going to tighten down on it though. Meanwhile, I think CU is in good shape. Especially if we continue putting players in the NFL at a high level. Players want to go to programs where they have an opportunity to showcase it on big stages(NC game is the biggest) and programs who have done it consistently.

Good post!

Hmmmm...interesting take

And I agree that it will be interesting to see how Dabo deals with it going forward.

I was way off - it's worse than I knew. Once I started digging I realized FSU and the Gamecocks weren't all that bad compared even to some.

Louisville has 16 guys in the portal. Virginia Tech has 17, which is not a good look for Justin Fuente, who at one point was considered one of the top 2-3 up-and-coming coaches in college football and one of the big "name" coaches on everybody's short list.

Ouch.

A big problem with the portal is that there are many more players in it than there are spots on other teams. I noticed that several of the Gamecock players did not have teams that they were going to, so I assume that some of them will not be playing football again, at least on Division I level. Some may end up with no scholarships. I think at least one of the Gamecock s in the portal is not a scholarship player (assuming that non-scholarship players are treated the same way). I think most of our players that have entered will get a huge amount of interest. Yeargin entered because he told Dabo he was through playing because of his injury and his scholarship was then given away, to my understanding.

The coaching staff should really look closely for grad transfers. In the right situation they can fill depth at specific position with a mature and experienced player. Usually the under grad transfer will need to sit for a year taking up a 4* high school players scholly, plus who knows about their attitude and work ethic.

Another thing the portal does is free up a future scholarship in that rare occasion the staff miscalculated. Belk is a perfect example. Swinney doesn’t need bad apples staying with the team but he honors his commitment so if a player stays clear of trouble he could remain at the back of the depth chart which isn’t ideal for a healthy culture.

I see noting positive about kids prioritizing their dream of playing in the NFL over getting an education. Unfortunately a lot of coaches sell this pipe dream during the recruiting process.

Thank you for that Tigerbalm. Education is getting totally left out of the conversation. Getting an education from Clemson can never be overstated. All this talk about the transfer portal and paying players is way, way, way off base. Everyone is losing the fact that an education is worth a fortune to these guys. And how do some repay the school, they ask for more money or leave the school that gave them the scholarship in the first place. I guess it's the way of the country right now. What a shame.

Why do we care about other teams? Our first priority is Clemson.

Jul 21, 2019, 1:06 AM

To date, Dabo has shown no inclination to bring in players from the transfer portal. Dabo commits to the recruit, and sticks with them throughout their tenure. Every departure is a net loss for our program.

We lose a student who Clemson has developed and groomed in the program for 1-4 years with the aim of them being a contributor. We lose valuable depth with their departure, valuable experience that can’t be replaced by a freshman or future recruit.

This is a definite benefit to the student, but only a negative to Clemson.

Do you think Louisville or VaTech are in our class right now? Are other programs losing 4* athletes that are contributing valuable snaps and one injury away from starting?
