Guys with higher football IQs than me (most of you):

It seems as though our biggest question mark is DE. I was wondering though, if our DTs are as good as they should be, doesn't that have a trickle down effect that will help the young DEs? If opponents have to put extra guys on our DTs, wouldn't that free up the ends and help the pass rush?

DE's need to set the edge. Important in pass rushing as well.

Let's be excited about this.

Last year I was able to ignore all the spring, summer and early season ignorance over how our 'depleted,' defence would perform. By the time the Playoff polls were announced it was clear to anyone who actually watched our games that we'd lost nothing on defense.
I mean, it's not as if our defense lost its coaching staff or S&C coaches.

You ideally want the DEs to draw the double teams...Especially since the double teams would free up the other DE being that their main responsibility is to set the edge. DT are used as specialists given the down and distance. You would want guys like Dex and Carlos in as big run gap stoppers and guys like Pagano and Wilkins to get after your QB. If an opponent has to resort to double teaming our interior DL consider that a win for our DEs and a concern that our DEs aren't drawing the double team. Its really all situational...

You're correct to some degree. However, our DEs still need to show that they're able to set the edge and play with proper technique and gap coverage while matched up in one-on-ones. Remember, a killer inside reverse swim move to beat the OT doesn't do anything but give up big yardage on a power sweep to the 9 gap.

I'm more concerned with the secondary.

if they can't beat good OTs one on one it won't matter, plus probably get chopped by rbs and rights. Most likely teams will double one of our dts with the center who may chip one and then move to the other.

And honestly I'm more worried about the young DEs setting the edge than in the pass rush.

The emergence of Kevin Dodd last season when we had ...

The emergence of Kevin Dodd last season when we had many of the same questions about DE corps should ease our minds about the ability of our coaching staff to find and develop players who are capable of taking the place of the stars who depart either through graduation or early to the NFL.
Every one of our upcoming crop of DE candidates was very highly regarded recruit. We really have no reason to doubt their talent and ability and even though they are young, they gained valuable experience as back-ups last year.
IMHO, our DEs are ready to make a name for themselves and the entire defensive line is going to have a tremendous season.

Kevin Dodd was 23 this time last year.
this year we have: Austin Bryant HS'15 (19/20 years old) Richard Yeargin HS'14 (20/21 years old) Clelin Ferrell HS'15 (19/20 years old) Xavier Kelly HS'16 (18/19 years old)

Doesn't change the fact that he sort of came out of nowhere to become an effective player once his time arrived.
The time has arrived for the bevy of 4-star guys we have on the team now.
Austin Bryant is not a rookie ... he already has more snaps than Kevin Dodd had at this time last year.
Yeargin and Ferrell are going to have to grow up fast, or we may be seeing Wilkins out on the end.
IMHO, we'll be fine at DE even though we may have to play through some growing pains.

packages. We may see even more of it with our DTs wreaking havoc on OLs. Carlos, Wilkins, Big Dex, Pagano all could demand double teams against most opponents. Look for blitzes to come from EVERYWHERE. Our DEs need only hold their own.

Yes i believe having great DTs will deff help settle the DEs in. They will get plenty of 1on1s on passing downs. As long as they can contain well on the run i believe we will be just fine. The talent is there and our scheme seems to help with stats at that position.

Pressure is most defiantly coming up the middle when at least the first two lines are in...maybe the third as well.
Young DE will have to be disciplined regarding containment. Yes, a blinding glimpse of the obvious observation.

Folks I have to say tbis is one of those days I love to be part of such an awesome fan base. I just saw several well stated points about the DL. Some of them I may disagree with slightly, but nothing outrageous. Just another reason I love having a knowledgeable fan base! I would also counter that any pass rush we can get from the DL is also extremly helpful to the DBs. As Bill pointed out, there is obviously some concern there, but as shown last year, a QB that can't set his feet males a DB look darn good!

Not to worry. Big Dex is just gonna grab the entire backfield, and keep throwing players away until he finds the one with the ball. Then - ORANGE CRUSH.
