Leonard's Losers.

Sep 10, 2015, 12:44 PM

This weekend Scott Satterfield and his merry band of hillbillies take a trip from the North Carolina hillside to Death Valley, South Carolina.
That Boy seems a little nervous this week as he wants to avoid becoming intertwined in Mountaineer folklore along with the weasels from Michigan.
The kitty cats from Pickens County will sputter a little bit at first, but Mr. Watson and his speedy corps of pigskin hustlers will eventually be too much to handle.

Leonard's Loser in a good one - Appalachian State.

Damm - Leonard's Losers...

Sep 10, 2015, 1:13 PM

When I was a little kid, my dad drove a truck for Pepsi. Pepsi didn't pay much and we were eternally dirt poor, but I still look back on my childhood as some of the most fun times of my life.

Anyway, on Saturday mornings, my dad had to drive around to a couple stores in the Greenville area and stock the shelves. As long as it wasn't baseball season and I wasn't playing, I'd ride along with him and help. It was tough work for a little kid, but I loved it.

After our shift, my dad would give me a couple bucks and take me out to lunch. There was a place on the west side of Greenville that will remain nameless, but it was a restaurant of sorts. It had mirrored glass and you used to have to be buzzed in and once inside, they had pinball machines and parlay cards. Basically a small casino that served breakfast and lunch.. I would usually get $3-$5 for my work and out of that, spend $1 either playing pinball, or occasionally I'd buy a parlay card. My dad would usually also buy a card and we'd sit at the counter and he'd let me read through Leonard's Losers (back then in the early 80's it was a little weekly magazine - not sure if it's still printed?) and let me make my picks.

Probably not the most correct way to raise a child, but I learned a ton about football back then, point spreads, home field advantages and the sort. And if I got very, very lucky - I'd win on my card and collect $5 or so the next week. I remember I used to pick more based on the names - Baylor and Rutgers always got picked for some reason, as did Clemson. The spreads would usually kill me - but win or lose, I always had a blast.

Just seeing the name "Leonard's Losers" brought back so much. Thanks for reminding me of those good old days.

Not only did they let you in as a child with dad...they even let you bet.

Those must have been some good ole days indeed. :)

That is correct! Huh - small world indeed!

Chances are, you either know me or my dad then. Is it still around? Doubtful, I'm guessing.

I live in Charleston now, but still think of that place. Occasionally, I'll get a whiff of a half pepper, half cigarette smell that immediately reminds me of that place.. Sounds terrible I know, but it brings a smile to my face.

Re: Roberts?

Sep 10, 2015, 2:08 PM

Indeed a small world. My grandparents lived on that side of town when I was a kid. Stepfather also had a Dr's office near there.

Sadly, it is no longer there. When they banned the poker machines it pretty much put him out of business, or at least took the majority of his profits away. When Robert left, he turned it over to Frank - the cook. He ran it for probably 7-10 years. Food was the same, but the place never was...

The sights, sounds, and smells of that place were classic! Some shady characters lol - but it was always fun. I remember walking into the cloud of smoke in their and the sounds of all the poker machines and cast of characters. The food was actually good, and was an instant hangover cure. You could get the hamburger steak w/cheese/gravy/onions all fries and a tea for $2.65...

Bet your dad probably knew my step father

Re: Roberts?

Sep 10, 2015, 2:32 PM

Thanks for the update. Yea - Robert's Cafe.. Robert was ahead of his time, as they say. And the hamburger steak - that was one of the staples of my dad's. I've tried to explain the parlay cards to my girlfriend - she loves to gamble, loves CFB but sadly has never seen such.

Unfortunately, my dad left Pepsi in 1989ish (maybe?) and lost track with a lot of the people on his route. He died in 1995 and that part of my life died with it.

I'd guess I probably used to go in there from 1983-1987 maybe? (Back when I was 5-8 years old or so) It's weird how certain times of your life can still seem clear as day. If your stepdad is still around, ask him if he remembers Harry, the Pepsi man. He worked that whole Cedar Lane Rd area and knew everyone. Riding around with him in that truck was like riding with a celebrity back then. Good times.

I went in mostly in my high school days (91'-94') just for the record I didn't go to Berea - not that there is anything wrong with that ;) Went to TR. We would skip lunch a lot and go to Roberts, also frequented Roberts often in the summertime - best food ever for a hangover.

I too, remember those days very clear. I was born in 76' so we are close in age. I don't talk to my step father that often anymore. I will ask him next time I talk to him though. Do you remember Ted & The Kut-Hut?

Re: Roberts?

Sep 10, 2015, 3:08 PM

The Kut Hut - no, I remember seeing it - we passed it often, but I can't say I ever went in there. We lived in the Welcome area and after a rough year at Tanglewood, we moved and I went to (and graduated from) Wren. As far as that area - my memories are confined to Ingles, Roberts, a couple of gas stations - and on days our family was feeling especially fancy, we would hit up Orr's for seafood. Oh - and many, many summer days spent at the Westside Pool (back before it got classy and they roofed it in).

I remember the Westside pool - some interesting characters there as well. I worked at the Ingles you're speaking of in high school

No, no - it had this smell that (to me) resembled ground pepper - and it was also filled with old dudes smoking. It mixed to form a smell I fondly equate with my childhood.

I've only been in Zorba's a few times. Zorbas is fine dining compared to Roberts...

The Gaslight is a classic place as well...They used to have the best game in town - for football entertainment ;)

Re: LOL...figured he was talking about the Zorba Lounge.***

Sep 10, 2015, 2:25 PM

Yea - agreed with gville76. I used to work near Zorba's and as shady as it was, it didn't hold a candle to Robert's Cafe. That was back when that area wasn't so bad and was made up of normal, working class people. I haven't been back in many years, but... I'm sure it's a little different now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still got parlay card from the Gaslight at work up until 3 or 4 years ago.

Guy that used to bring them in, "Butch",
retired but then soon after passed. Hadn't thought about that place in a while.

Great part of my childhood, Leonard's Losers on the radio at some point as we neared Clemson early on a gameday Saturday morning. We had about a 5 hour drive, and dad would round us all up at around 4:30 or 5:00 am and into the old Custom Chevy van "the tailgate machine" with the tiger tail waving from the rear doors and a rubber chicken tied by its feet to the ladder on the back, whether we were playing USuCk or not. Magnetic tiger paws all over that van.... Leonard's Losers was a highlight of the trip... must have been early '80s...

Good memories....

Wow. I knew this thread would take me back a little when I saw "Leonard's Losers" but...

I didn't expect this much nostalgia. My grandparents lived on Farrs Bridge Rd and I spent every other weekend with them. Grandpa frequented Robert's (quit gambling and drinking long before Frank's). I still live on the gritty side of Gville but things have definitely changed. One thing will never change,
Go Tigers!
