My feelings on statues

Jun 23, 2020, 10:25 PM

is slightly more positive than James Baldwin. But I appreciate his and Ken Burns’ measured, thoughtful opinion all the same.

Statues in general are overrated, unless they are fun and abstract.

How long was James Baldwin a slave?***

He would probably say his whole life

Jun 23, 2020, 11:17 PM

He had a great debate on the American South’s subjugation of the “American Negro” with William F Buckley in at Cambridge U.

He beat Buckley 545 to 185. Great book about it called “The Fire Is Upon Us”

You can’t judge the man from here so easily

Jun 23, 2020, 11:42 PM

especially after he has eaten your intellectual lunch, day after day to infinity.

“ Incontestably, alas, most people are not, in action, worth very much; and yet, every human being is an unprecedented miracle. One tries to treat them as the miracles they are, while trying to protect oneself against the disasters they’ve become.” - James Baldwin

While I don't drink tea, I do watch PBS

Jun 24, 2020, 10:22 AM

and one thing I am a fan of is a man's perspective that is still relevant 60 years, or 100 years, or a thousand years later. It's kind of like saying we can't have a nice pleasant democracy because too many people are reading Voltaire or Homer.

Alas, based on the posts I've read from you T3Tiger, it is not surprising that you can't understand why Baldwin is relevant all these years later. I don't know what happened to you in your life that would lead you to have such a myopic point of view, but it sounds both pedestrian and privileged, lol.

Yes and I am sure your film and video production career

Jun 24, 2020, 12:41 PM

has instilled great abilities in math, science, and how to analyze data and think critically.

This is today's problem - a bunch of liberal dummies who think anything can and must be explained in 140 characters. No time for attention to details or search for ground truth.

I don't believe I was addressing you NC_Tiger_

Jun 24, 2020, 2:11 PM

but since I have you on the line, what about Baldwin's opinion strikes you as lacking in attention to detail?

Do you even know what the Hale we are discussing here?

If you are going to pop off with a few sparsely formed ideas about the convo, at least have the grace and mental fortitude to bring some substance. Good grief you people are lost.

That's because we freed Europe from the clutches of the NAZI regime 75 years ago. I'm glad he found a safe space.

^^ Exactly! Hundreds of thousands of white people

died for this dude's privilege to move to Europe! How ironic.

This is probably the best example of

Jun 24, 2020, 1:30 PM

The mindset associated with white privilege that I have ever seen. A war fought 80 years ago to free Europe from Hitler is capital in the bank of race relations for white people because a lot of white people died and a black intellectual moved to France.

If it doesn't belong to me I need permission to touch it. Why didn't these people learn that from their parents. It's the first step to not being a thief.
