My favorite defensive player when football was "FOOTBALL" was Ronnie Lott. He was pound for pound the most consistent big hitter I ever saw play and maybe the toughest guy I ever saw play. One time he broke his finger in a play off game and had the team doctor cut it off so he could go back in the game to lay some more people out! The stuff that made players stars back then would get players fined or thrown out today!

Good Lord, how long would Levon Kirkland have gotten for his tackle of Major Harris in the 89 Gator Bowl. He jumped a blocker and nailed Harris. Enjoyed that.

Hey George - How wrong is it for wanting a hit like this on "5head" for posterity's sake, or simply to view in perpetuity?
Lord Forgive Me . . . and bless all the pigmys down in Africa!

I don't think he struggled with it. It was more like he made up his owm version of it. Many of the terms and phrases he came up with were Yogi Berra-ish.

You should read the book "The Last Headbangers" by Kevin

Cook. Covers the formation of the NFL but focuses on the great '70s era of the NFL (when the NFL came of age). That was the quintessential era of violent football that ultimately started all these safety rules we see today.
Unbelievable how many guys played with serious injuries back in those days - and did so for a lot less pay than what pro players make now. The stories about the Raiders and Steelers are great and he also highlights the special relationship between Joe Montana and Dwight Clark. The stories he tells about the early Monday Night football commentators (Howard Cosell, Don Merideth, Frank Gifford etc...) are absolutely hilarious... Highly recommend reading this book especially if you grew up in that era watching these games on TV (back when we only had three major channels - CBS, NBC, and abc)...
