All of these other statistics are measured as a way to predict eventual outcomes. But being lost in it all is the actual outcomes. Think about how many championships those Leach-led Texas Tech teams won! Or those top-10 Boston College defensive teams. Or those #1 rushing GA Tech teams. There is a relativity there that doesn’t seem to be adjusted for, but more importantly not acknowledged by the persons using them as validation.
Common opponents is a another common measurement that gets over-valued. Any athlete understands they aren’t playing against that team from 3 weeks ago. That’s why I’m a big fan of even downplaying transitive matchups; otherwise, one would logically conclude UNC > USC > UGA.
I think we are fine as a team. Just frustrated with stat-happy analysts that think they’ve got it figured out without realizing it’s only about the wins.
