What's your most memorable Clemson vs. Carolina game ?

Nov 25, 2019, 9:05 AM

This Saturday will be 45 in a row that I have attended. There have been many great Tiger wins. If I had to choose one , it would be 1977, The catch #1. Fuller to Butler... GO TIGERS !

I also enjoyed the one where Emory Smith went off dragging players, etc. We were in very nice seats on the UofSC side. The nice twice my age lady beside me with the gamecock earrings told my girlfriend (a UGA grad) to "kiss her ###". 1995ish?

I remember this game because my Dad was in the hospital.

Nov 25, 2019, 11:19 AM

Mom and I went to 'tailgate' in his room and watch the game with him.

When Emory Smith dragged those defenders, we were cheering so loudly, the nurses ran to the room thinking something awful had happened to my Dad. Once they got there and knew everything was good, they watched the replay with us and cheered with us.

Up until a few years ago I fixed surgical equipment for a living. One morning I was in the surgical suite at Greer Memorial waiting for an employee to card swipe me into the locker room where I could dress out in their scrubs. There was a very large man waiting there with me. He was a surgical sales rep and his name tag read, "Jim Bundren". Now really, how many Jim Bundren's could there possible be hanging around the upstate of South Carolina ?

So I get to talking to him and I don't think I've ever met anyone transplanted into the rivalry who hated the coots as much as him. As we were dressing out I asked him what his favorite takeaway from football was. He responded that it was definitely in the rivalry game and he asked if I recalled that play where Emory Smith carried half the Gamecock defense to the endzone.

He told me that was his favorite as he got a "two-for-one" on that play. Said he drove a d-lineman straight back over a linebacker, pancaked one on top of the other, then just for good measure he flopped on top of both of them !

I would have to give three, I call them The Good, The Bad,

Nov 25, 2019, 9:14 AM

and the Ugly.

The Good: 63-17 in 2003, mainly because it was so unexpected.
The Bad: 56-20 in 1975, darkest day in the rivalry for me to be personally in attendance.
The Ugly: The Brawl.2004. I had to actually look up the score to see that we won 29-7. I only remember the brawl.

2: Last year because it was the first CLEMSON-SC my dad attended together
3. The Rod Gardner catch. We were surrounded by coot fans already licking their greedy little fingers. Then Rod Gardner made that awesome first down catch. We kicked a FG to win and the crowd around disappeared with in a few very short minutes.

Start out with the oldest one...November 22, 1986. We played them at Clemson. Was a tie. All night every drunk USC fan up there kept saying "Tie y'all doin!!" Drove me mad.

Then 45-0, which was 1989 I believe. At USC. I remember at the end we were in the endzone where the team went into the locker room and some dude with orange overalls and an orange beard was hooping and hollering. There was NO ONE left in that stadium but Clemson fans.

Re: What's your most memorable Clemson vs. Carolina game ?

Nov 25, 2019, 11:13 AM

Most memorable was the 63-17 game. Memorable in that my wife refuses to ever step foot in the cockroach again. Fans before, during and after the game were horrible. Granted, most of them left the stadium early but those that were left in the parking lots wanted to fight.

We were gracious visitors the entire time. Never even said a negative word to any of their fans. I even cooked a butt load of ribs and invited practically everyone in the fairgrounds to eat/drink. Probably had close to 40 of their fans come get food...they talked trash constantly but that was expected. They paid us back for our generosity by trashing our vehicles and stealing everything that wasn’t locked down while we were in the game.

My sister was with us and was a USCe casual fan at the time (lived in Cola and had gamecock friends) and was the one to get me the parking pass in the fairgrounds. After that game experience she was done with them...

Was thinking of going this year but the wife won’t go.

Several friends had come over to the house. We used a projector from work to show it on my wall. We decided to decorate my Christmas tree if we scored 70. Unfortunately, I had to decorate the tree myself. But, it was a lot of fun watching that game as we utterly destroyed the coots.

The Catch 2 in 2000. I was 7 years old and remember it like it was yesterday. My dad and I sat in the old west end zone beside the Gamecock band. Towards the end of the game we started to leave the stadium thinking we were gonna lose. We got down by the fence and I remember my dad putting me on his shoulders so I could see the game, and watching Rod make the catch. That catch and the game winning kick was one of the greatest moments in the rivalry since I’ve been alive, especially if you were there! Great father and son moment that I’ll never forget. For me its the 2016 game. The coots had a decent season and Bentley had some hype behind him as he was a true freshman and playing pretty well in all of his games. We had a lot of close games that year and with a loss to Pitt just a few weeks prior, coots thought this would be another upset. The coots had no chance during the game and we beat the heck out of them 56-7. I also loved DW, BB amd Mike Williams calling them their little brother after the game

Re: What's your most memorable Clemson vs. Carolina game ?

Nov 25, 2019, 1:08 PM

2000 - The Catch 2. After the chickens scored, the whole stadium was deflated. It took a second for the stadium to realize Rod had caught the pass. Then it absolutely erupted. It was an awesome way to win as the chickens were flying high only to hit the ground with a resounding splat.

2003- 63-17. Chicken fans talked smack all week on the radio shows. They were favored in the game. We were up 21-0 before they knew what hit'm. And Ole Coach Bowden never really let up. We stopped throwing it, but the coots D quit and we still kept scoring. I still don't know how they scored 17.

2004 - The Brawl. As much as we dominated them in 2003, we dominated them even more in 2004. The score just doesn't reflect it. It all started with David Dunham's big hit on the opening kick of that cause a fumble. The chickens didn't get their first, first down until we blocked a punt, and the punt was able to pick it up and run for a first down. The fight started about 10 yards in front of me. It started when a gamecock pushed one of our defenders back onto Syvelle Newton who was on the ground. The pushing quickly started and the gamecocks emptied the bench. We beat the heck out of them that day.

56-7 was sweet as well. I sit behind the visitor's bench. A lot of chickens players where laughing it up on the side lines. Bentley wasn't hurt when he was pulled.

On TV, I'll throw out an oddball - 1997. Was largest crowd @ WB at time. Clemson overcame 14-3 deficit & scored 44 unanswered, aided by 2 TDs by Tony Horne & pick 6 by Antwaun Edwards. Memorable to me b/c watched it @ my grandparents' house & was last Clemson-Carolina game I'd watch w/ my papa on that side of the family (big Clemson fan, big reason I became a Clemson fan & later a student - he passed away the following summer)

Saw 3 in person during my time @ Clemson, '04 was memorable for wrong reasons (brawl overshadowed a great performance by our Tigers that day). Converting 1st & 35 and scoring late in the '05 contest to break their hearts in WB was fun, although ended up having to break up a fight in the stands & help get couple fellow students away from unruly butthurt Carolina fan. On top of that, my brother was stationed @ Shaw AFB & was picked to work security for the game - he got posted up in front of the Clemson fan/band section in lower level & had Clemson & Carolina cheerleaders on either side of him (still rubs it in 14 years later). Then got to witness drunk chick in 8 inch heels step I'm a pothole & go down like a newborn giraffe on the walk back to the car.

'06 was worst loss b/c saw it in person & was last game I attended as a student. Sickening feeling watching that 28-14 lead evaporate & hearing the "USC" chants from the Carolina fans ring out of the Valley afterward.

Worst: 1984. We lost in orange pants for the first time. We were leading 21-15 and USC scored late. They missed the extra point to make it 21-21. But, we had freaking 12 men on the field. They re-kick and win. Horrible.

Best: 1985 in Columbia. I was a cheerleader and we won 24-17.

Most memorable : Obviously the "Touchdown Clemson" game in 2003. Ben Hall is still open to this day.

Most satisfying: 2007 Mark Bucholtz game-winner in WB (one year after the Jad Dean shank at home) that knocked the chickens out of bowl consideration.

probably 1987-88-89

One of those years.

Rode with my dad and a couple of his coot cousins.

I was 5-8 ish

Clemson won at home and we rode in an old Oldsmobile.

63-17 was spent in the tailgate lots as a student and not going in. That night got wild. Possibly an adopted dog from five points.

2004 USC-Clemson brawl was nastiest moment in series history

On November 18, 2004, Holtz announced that he would retire at the end of the season. On November 21, 2004, the Clemson – South Carolina brawl took place during Holtz's last regular season game.

1976 - Red Parker's last game. 26-9

Nov 25, 2019, 10:10 PM

Clemson was expected to lose. But the word was that if Clemson could win that game, Red Parker would keep his job. Clemson won, but Red Parker lost his job anyway. It was a pretty large upset. I remember celebrating around campus and downtown. Coots were pissed. Tiger fans were ecstatic.

Clemson finished the year 3-6-2 and was in the ACC. SCAR finished the year 6-5 as an Independent team.

It was my senior year, so that made it more special. Plus, despite a pretty crummy record, the team was exciting and very competitive in most games. In 3 games, we lost by 2, 4 and 6 points. And there were the 2 ties. Clemson very easily could have finished with an 8-3 record.

Steve Fuller had taken the job from Senior Mike O'Cain. Other stars included Jerry Butler, Warren Ratchford, Dwight Clark, Joe Bostic, Lester Brown, Bill Wingo, Rex Varn, Randy Scott, and Rich Tuten. Lots of talent on that team.

beat them twice that day...We led 24-0 at the half, coots were leaving in droves, they come back to take the lead in the 4th, 28-24. Coots still there were going crazy! The the Fuller to Butler "Catch" happened! A great day to be a Tiger!!
