What's the reason for this?

Jan 31, 2013, 1:40 PM

I was looking through the list of NCAA basketball champions. From Oregon's winning the first in 1939 to UCLA's win in 1975, 20 championships were won by teams from west of the Mississippi. Since UCLA's win in 1975, teams from west of the Mississippi have won only 5 championships.

It's pretty much the same length of time, so why the diparity? I thought about NCAA rules changes, but rules changes offered parity to schools west of the Mississippi, too.

Any ideas?

Im no expert but... back then, places like UCLA pretty much got every top player in the west. Now I think recruiting is more spread out (like coaches talking to players from all over the country) and kids today really dont want to ride the bench for a year or two, so some try to go to a place they can play (not necessarily a lesser school) and possibly get to the league quicker ($$).
This info has come from countless sports conversations with older gentlemen that witnessed the era.
