I think it is to prevent fake injuries to stop the clock.

Correct, but you have to call the defensive player in the neutral zone instead of false start.

Correct .... you wonder if some of these guys ever watch college football. It has nothing to do with fake injuries or defensive players in the neutral zone. A defensive penalty would stop the clock and certainly wouldn't penalize the offensive team with a 10 second run-off. Even after an offensive penalty and 10 second run-off the clock starts at the ref's signal.
