What is the defensive scheme BV runs?
Oct 19, 2016, 11:14 PM

My other post was supposed to a hypothetical question. My point was that in a zone blitz scheme athletic linebackers allow the scheme to be fully utilized. BV in OK had linebackers that where big and fast, that where able to play run and pass in any situation.
Look at it this way when CJ went to the Bills everybody was upset why because the offensive scheme didn't utilize CJ skill set. Clemson fans would have much rather seen him in play in a west coast style offense.

It's really more about the D-line IMO

A defensive line that gets good push opens it up for the LBs to roam and be able to make plays, which is critical in a zone based D. Of course more athletic linebackers can take it to another level, but it all starts up front. Which is why the defense is in good shape for the foreseeable future.

Technically a 4-3, but multiple really.

It's hard and rare to use a base 4-3 any more. BV drops DEs, uses any where from 4-6 DBs, spies, etc. He brings pressure from every angle and position.
It's more about gap integrity than anything, and it has to be. Offenses do so much to confuse and create mismatches. We'll see more and more players transition to the NFL for that reason.

Venables, in my mind - is one of the brightest and most prepared defensive coaches in the country. He is top 3 if not higher, acknowledged by the media many times because of his end of year rankings in top 5 categories for his players.
I hope to see a lot of pass rush on the QB at FLS, and of course as you mentioned- the linebacker aggressive pass/run blocking option on Cook. Credit to Bill Snyder for teaching Venables that took him to OK, then to Clemson.

Base 4-3 but he will offer many many different looks given the situation and what type of game..he loves to show a lot of 3-4 and drop the ends into coverage...

Was an attacking 4/3 but now we've gone to a multiple adding a 3/4 look now since we have big Dex and Christian Wilkins.

It's called WTFW (Whatever The bleep Works)
It seems to change from week to week depending on the opponent. He seems to just bring pressure and trust his dbs to cover guys up. However you never seem to know where the pressure will come from.

You obviously don't run the same defensive scheme against Ga. Tech that you would against Louisville.

It's actually a 4-2-5. Similar to the old Nickle defense but instead of a dedicated Nickleback that position is a linebacker/safety hybrid that allows for more elaborate calls with linebackers & safeties as far as run blitzes & different coverages. The gap fits up front are critical for it to work & drawing a double team from the 3 is important for the edge rush to be successful on a consistent basis. It's a fairly simple scheme that allows guys to play fast & run to the ball but the DB's really have to do their jobs.
