What if the NFL required college degrees?

Sep 8, 2017, 8:04 AM

What if the NFL required players to have college degrees (older players would be grandfathered in)? Obviously the degrees would have to come from schools that were regionally or nationally accredited.

Would it help or hurt the NFL?
What would it do to college football?

Will never happen

The current system works well as it is. Especially compared to NBA and MLB.

They'd never make that rule because some people would say it's "racist."

Then you would have a lot of situations like Clowney coming out of high school were players would be receiving their degrees under false pretenses.

Plus, I couldn't care less if a Panthers DB can read, just as long as he can cover Julio Jones.

Heck, a lot of these kids don't attend class, or are tutored or take easy courses.
No, just make them play 3 years and then go pro if they are good enough.

Some Schools (eventually more and more) would just start "Rubber Stamping" Degrees as part of the "Deal" to get kids to play for them!

Why would they?

Sep 8, 2017, 9:29 AM

I don't really see the upside (and don't really see the business need/reasoning they'd be able to use to defend such a rule).

Playing football really has nothing to do with having a college degree. They can make a defense as to their age rules by arguing that physically a person could not be ready for the rigors of playing in the league until they reach a certain age, but not sure how they'd defend adding a college degree as a prerequisite to playing in the league.

And moreover, why would they? What do they gain?

Make no mistake, that rule would probably in the end help college football, but only minimally and it would likely lead to more "UNC" situations.

Then Duke, Standord and Clemson would have the most pros

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is absolutely no call for that.

Sep 8, 2017, 10:09 AM

It would hurt players and college football.

Players who are ready would be forced to wait. Kids who are well qualified for a career as a professional athlete might be unable to pursue that path because they are unable to obtain a meaningless credential. College rosters would fill up with players who are only there because they have to be.

It MIGHT help the NFL because it allows them to avoid the "take a chance" pick on a younger super-star, but that's no reason to create an arbitrary barrier to entry.

You wouldn't have as many players.

The draft would only take ONE day, because there would only be ~ 8 teams out of 32 because they could not fill the rosters. Don't watch on TV, don't buy their gear, etc. and those teams would disappear overnight.

If people really wanted this to happen, then those people should boycott all NFL teams that had a player without a degree until that player was released.

Oh yeah - we would no longer see those "Now Hiring" signs at McDonald's.

Can we do this with the NBA? Can we start with Steph Curry and his team?
