Clemson finishes 14th in final Golfweek poll

Apr 3, 2020, 3:07 PM

Clemson, S.C—Clemson is ranked 14th in the final Golfweek/Sagarin Computer poll. It marks the sixth straight year Clemson has been ranked in the top 20 of at least one of the major college golf polls. That includes a top 15 final ranking four of the last five years.

Clemson also finished 20th in the Final Golf Coaches Association poll and 22nd in the Golfstat computer poll. In normal seasons the final Coaches ranking is based on the NCAA National Tournament finish, but this year in light of the Coronavirus, there is no NCAA Tournament.

The 2019-20 season marks the 25th Top 20 season for Head Coach Larry Penley, more than any coach in any sport in Clemson history. He has also guided Clemson to 13 top 10 seasons and eight top five seasons in his 37 years as Clemson head coach.

Clemson won the Palmetto Invitational in its final tournament of the spring, and the Jack Nicklaus Match Play last October, giving Penley 79 career victories, four off the ACC record of 83 set by former Wake Forest coach Jesse Haddock.

The final Golfweek poll was documentation of the competition in ACC golf this year. Clemson was one of six league teams in the top 14. Georgia Tech ranked third, Wake Forest was sixth, Louisville was 11th, Duke 12th, North Carolina 13th and the Tigers 14. Notre Dame was a seventh ACC team in the top 25 as the Irish finished were 24th.

As far as individual rankings are concerned, sophomore Jacob Bridgeman was the highest ranked Clemson golfer. The native of Inman, SC finished 33rd in the final individual rankings by Golfweek and he was 55th by Golfstat. Bridgeman finished 12th in par four scoring at 3.95 and was 24th in scoring average at 70.14.

Turk Pettit was rated 67th in the final Golfweek individual rankings and was 94th by Golfstat.
