If those numbers are accurate................

Clemson's getting FAR more bang for their buck than Tennessee........
Tennessee spent over $2.5 MILLION DOLLARS on recruiting last year???? I realize it may take a year or two for the talent to develop, but if my recruiting staff outspent the world by that much money, I'd have expected better results immediately

I wonder how much of these expenses are for staffing, and signing bonuses for staff coming into the organization.

Tennessee must have blown all the money on escorts and strip

club visits. Isn't that how they recruited Brandon Willis and the other SC DE several years ago? I remember some fishy tales of being picked up by escorts and driven to Knoxville.

These numbers mean nothing. We aren't just comparing apples to oranges; we are comparing apples to oranges to pears to peaches etc. Unless there is a clear and consistent definition of "recruiting expenses" and it is audited, the numbers mean nothing, interesting maybe, but meaningless.

Understand TN, but GT?

Tennessee has outspent everyone else on recruiting for years.
Shocked GT is that high. They are in the motherlode of talent. Shouldn't have to travel too far for players.

are. Plus, UGA dominates in-state, and FSU, Auburn, Clemson, USC, UT, etc. get a lot of players from GA.

With all of the recruiting rules and regs, is it just a bit

surprising that there are no rules limiting spending? Doesn't exactly seem that an endless checkbook aides the NCAA's attempt at parity. Just sayin' . . .

I don't know how you would control that
Jun 12, 2012, 2:05 PM
|
|
there would be too many factors like difficulty of getting to the school, costs of the area (hotels/restaurants etc) and your recruiting footprint to have a one size fits all.
I believe limited what you can spend on an official visit after that recruit that was blogging about the high end restaurants and hotel suits with hottubs that Miami and Auburn were pouring on him.

$100,000 per recruit..sounds low for the SEC
Jun 12, 2012, 2:02 PM
|
|
Of course they also bring in about 50 folks a year so its down to 50k per player. Wow, when you look at it that way, the SEC recruits are taking a pay cut.

As a former cost accountant
Jun 12, 2012, 5:59 PM
|
|
(and a darn good one thanks to my Clemson education)
I can tell you that the variances in the $s are probably the result of cost allocations. For example:
* You know you have to count hard costs (travel for recruiting) * You know you have to count the salaries, benefits and other expenses of any personnel that are 100% dedicated to recruiting
After that there is no right or wrong way to do it unless the NCAA or some accounting body has produced a detailed manual you must use. If not, the college has to decide things like:
* Do we allocate a portion of the coaches' salaries and benefits to recruiting? If so, how? * Do we allocate any of the facility costs to recruiting? If so, how? * Do we charge the tickets for games attended by recruits to recruiting (did they actually use a ticket)?
As you can see a lot of people would do this different ways and you could end up with vastly different $ amounts even if you're doing about the same thing.

We benefit from mainly recruiting in our region.

Those other programs seem to try to or need to recruit more nationally. while we can settle in SC, NC, VA, FL, GA.
