I've tried a few (Guiness, Sam Adams Oatmeal Stout and Left Hand Milk Stout) and have really liked all three.

Highland makes a Black Mocha or something like that.

And also the oatmeal porter and Gelic Ale... though I am not a beer aficionado and the gaelic may not be considered a stout. Allthough it is still pretty full bodied.

The Gaelic is an amber American ale. The porter is a porter.

The Black Mocha is a stout though. And a decent stout, at that.

If I'm drinking a dark beer, I tend to swerve toward porters rather than stouts, tho.

Guinness sucks.

There. I said it. It looks like it should be amazing, and then you get a mouthful of the blandest, most boring beer ever. No hops or bite, and bland, tasteless malt. Bud Light has more character than Guinness. Neither is offensive, they just define "boring". Literally every other stout I've tried is better than Guinness, and yet somehow, Guinness outsells every one of them. HOW, I ask?

say that what you get in a pub there and what comes out of the bottle here are distinctly different beers. Don't know, but I can say I poured a shitpot of black & tans at Edgar's back in the day. Not sure why folks loved it, other than the fact that Edgar's was only place in Clemson that had it. I never was much of a fan.

Guinness is fine, especially if you want a beer that has a little more malty- roasted taste than something the girls like to drink. I'm not personally a huge fan of hops, which is why I would order a stout to begin with, so I'm fine with it not having much of a hoppy kick. Stouts also tend to be lighter, which I guess means a lot of people would think they are "bland." You just have to know what you're getting into.
I guess if you define "character" as having "hops or bite," then Bud Light does have more character than Guinness. But I prefer darker beers with more malt, roast and chocalatey flavors over the hoppy/ citrusy/ bitter stuff. Those beers, to me, are for hot weather and heavy drinking.

I love stouts and porters. Character is not defined by hops or bite, it's defined by ANY kind of flavor. Guinness has very little. It's bland. It's literally at the bottom of the heap of all the stouts I've tried, and that's a pretty respectable-sized pile.

I told the guy I wanted to get a growler. when i went to leave, i asked him to fill one. He said, sorry, we cant sell growlers after 12. ###! i asked for it at 8:30!
I wish i had brought a growler of it home.
