So I've ripped out about a dozen shrubs the hard way

May 2, 2019, 7:25 PM

using loppers, an ax and a mattock.

We're talking about well-establish root structures that are almost impossible to dig through with a shovel. I've taken out what I can without digging a trench, but I imagine it's going to be hard to replant anytime soon.

What do now? Wait a season or two for the remaining roots to completely die and rot? I don't have much room in the backyard for machinery, and I didn't feel like taking the fence down to yank everything out root and stem with a truck.

Now you drink a beer.

This is the only acceptable answer.

May 2, 2019, 7:28 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

At least you didn't have to go to work while you dug shrubs.***

Thanks. I can be patient on the back shurbs,

May 2, 2019, 7:44 PM

but I'm also planning on ripping out the sides and the fronts, Too. Trying to start with a clean slate and plant what I want to.

I think I'm gonna rip out the front ones with a truck, even if it means having to replant grass at the front of the bed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's the trick. Or a 4WD compact tractor in low.

May 2, 2019, 9:46 PM

if you paint the roots w/ Roundup, do it while the cut is still fresh.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've used nuthin but trucks.

May 2, 2019, 10:16 PM

1997 LandCruiser once, didn't even have to hit the gas pedal.

Last time used the Cayenne. Locked the center and rear diffs on both of em.

I was puckered tight on the last one....was just waiting to shid out a $5k transmission on the ground pulling shrubs, but it was stout.

Paid a guy $200 cash to pull approx. 100 seventy year old...

May 2, 2019, 9:46 PM

azaleas, roots and all. Dude was a magician on that backhoe. He hauled them away in a dump truck as well.

Offered him a beer afterwards, he said "For another $50 i'll fill all these holes with topsoil".

Came home from work the next day, entire area perfectly smooth with nice fresh topsoil, ready for planting.

I almost cried

I pulled up approx 35 mature boxwoods with a chain hooked to my 4 wheel drive Jeep. As soon as I drug them to the street someone would pick them up...Amazing

May 3, 2019, 8:31 AM

around the bush/small tree, then pull up with a 2003 Pathfinder 4X4.

At least, that's what works for me.

Pay someone...

May 3, 2019, 9:15 AM

I cut down a huge hegde a few years back. Probably had 75 - 100 stumps/roots. My yard guy said let me know if I wanted him to take care of them, I said, I've got this but thanks though. Got a farm jack and went to work. 1st stump/roots, out in 20 seconds, I've got this...2nd stump, 3 hours and still didn't get it out...close to heat stroke at this point. Text my yard guy, he quotes me what would have seemed like a ridiculous amount prior to my futile attemp. I couldn't respond done deal quickly enough. He and another guy worked two days with pick axes and hoes in July heat, nice neat and raked spot when they were done.
