Week 6 Prodigal Football Ratings

Why, hello there, Clemson. Winning by 60 points, and multiple teams ahead of them losing, have put Clemson back in that familiar #2 spot in these ratings. The Top 5 here are the same as the Top 5 in the human polls, just in a different order.

can make sure 2 SEC teams don't get in. Now, if one of those teams stumble, then that opens the door.

Is the SEC East back?
Oct 8, 2018, 11:20 AM

They have actually won 3 out of 4 from the SEC West so far. With the continued dominance of Georgia, the rise of Kentucky, and the resurgence of Florida, the SEC East has passed the SEC West in my ratings for now. They are the top two divisions in the nation.

Pretty sage...Tennessee gets Auburn and Alabama next 2 weeks

Alabama plays Missouri next week, Georgia at LSU, Texas A&M-South Carolina.
So that record between the East and West could shift a lot.

As a whole, the SEC is way out in front this year...

(If you remember last year, the Big Ten beat them out overall)
This year, they have been dominant, but against what my ratings say is the weakest OOC slate of any conference. But, they are winning the games, and by a lot. Other conferences aren't doing it that at the same rate. Arkansas is the outlier, losing to Colorado St. and North Texas. Besides them, the only OOC losses the conference has suffered have been to still-undefeated teams: Texas A&M vs. Clemson, Tennessee vs. WVU, and Vanderbilt at Notre Dame.

My ratings have them as the highest-rated 2-loss team.

Some of that is still small sample size hanging on, since they got a game rained out. They are being floated by little bit of an exaggerated schedule strength that I don't see holding up once more games are played. The game they missed (vs. Marshall) would have been the weakest team on their schedule thus far.

It's numbers. Their opponents are 18-5.

(When not playing SC). That's the third-best such figure in the nation (UCLA's opponents are 20-3, Army's are 20-4). Their opponents' opponents' record is much better than either (.634 to .486 and .403), which boosts them to #1 in SOS.
Their opponents' average point differential is second only to UCLA.

their FCS in the second-to-last game of the season. That will hurt the SOS ranking bad, but you'll have to wait for it.
