Wealthiest Athletic Departments

Dec 5, 2012, 9:25 PM

The numbers for 2010-2011 are out here:

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/12/alabama_and_auburn_stay_among.html#incart_river_default

I was very surprised that we are that far down (42). However, the article said that the new ACC contract would give a boost to all the ACC teams.

What do you think this means for our ability to compete in all sports at a national level?

Does this list take into account...

USC $20MM more PER YEAR.

9 SEC schools above the highest ACC school (FSU).

UVA football more profitable than Clemson.

/Story.

Isn't this not just the cause of our success but the effect

I just glanced at it, but I don't think this takes into consideration debt on hand. Clemson is making money, and we don't have a lot of debt. South Carolina, not so much. In fact, it is one the things that our new AD says we need to take advantage of: Clemson has so little debt that we need to start upgrading facilities while money is cheap.

Good point. I will say, I'm very cautious about increasing the athletic department's debt. I know we make money but I look at Maryland's finances and shudder.

I read it as just revenues

And not a balance sheet.

And what really sticks out is that Auburn and Tennessee are not getting much of a return in terms of wins (guess there is only one Cam Newton on the market every few years that can be bought without NCAA sanctions).

There are lots of teams ahead of us on the list....

that are not getting an ROI as football wins. I was also surprised at the amount of revenue that both UVA and Duke are getting.

Every time I see UVA revenue I'm always surprised..******
