Talent gap Clemson over Alabama

Jan 13, 2019, 9:26 PM

Talent gap Clemson over Alabama. Although national media outlets suggest that Clemson has comparable talent to Alabama, in reality Clemson had a real talent gap over Alabama in the areas that mattered - staying on the field on third down offense and scoring touchdowns.

Wide receivers over defensive backs. Our four-star and five star receivers simply outmatched Alabama’s five star defensive backs. Given three downs to make a first down, Trevor Lawrence could always rely on a bigger, taller, faster, more talented player to make a play to cover a first down. Also this talent gap translated into big plays to score touchdowns or reverse the field. Also this talent could score red zone touchdowns or spread the defense to assist running touchdowns.

Clemson’s defensive line wasn’t just good, it was other worldly good. The two deep even with out Dexter Lawrence dominated the five star offensive line of Alabama. Sometimes the OL is able to push a DL around. In this case the great DL players controlled the LOS well enough to make long drives impossible to sustain. And Clemson dominated third and fourth downs on the line of scrimmage when it mattered.

Talent across the board two deep on defense. Never worried when I saw one of the Davis twins other senior linebackers on the field. Never worried if 12 and 19 were on the field at safety or if 24 and 14 were on the field. They were dependable and every one played rested.

Clemson cornerbacks outmatched Alabama receivers and Alabama kept running those same slants and timing routes all game without being able to pick on a corner. This year we kept all but one of those pass plays in front of us and there were no big scoring plays save one.

Despite Nick Saban’s historical greatness, this game revealed a clear talent gap in favor of Clemson’s consistent coaching staff compared to Alabama’s revolving door coaching staff which made no meaningful adjustments in the game.

The fact Clemson players outperformed Bama’s 5*s is because of a coaching gap. Bama’s only hope is to get NFL type players because they aren’t going to coach them up.

Like Saban himself said when he was hired at Bama. They may not have gotten the best head coach in the country but they got one heck of a recruiter.

We flat-out out-coached them this year.

We don't have a talent gap over them. Our talent is on par with their's. Our coaching staff had the superior game-plan. They had the superior game-plan last year. Our talent beat their's the year before that, and we got out-coached the year before that.
