Way to go SC legislature. You voted a gas tax that will be

May 10, 2017, 5:36 PM

used for everything except fixing the thousands of pointless roads we have.

Rather than audit and correct a completely mismanaged agency (SCDOT), they just pawn off more costs to the citizenship.

The gas tax goes from 16.75 cents per gallon to 28.75 cents per gallon over the next six years--or a 72% increase.

Thumbs up, SC.

SC Governership, Senate and House are controlled by Republicans.

Like in other Republican controlled states "fiscal responsibility" and "lower taxes" are merely campaign advertising in order to get elected.

They do.

We also have a lot of paved roads we simply don't need--and a DOT that hasn't changed it's method of prioritizing and spending money even AFTER they were audited.

How any legislator voted for this knowing the agency is in disarray, I don't understand.

no point in paving the roads when we can just drive our tractors into town.

Weird, I'm constantly driving on dirt roads around the Columbia area.***

I haven't read the entire bill (kinda like the house pubs with our health care bill)

but

We haven't had a gas tax raise in 30 years. Its over due. As is a tax increase on cigarettes and alcohol.

I do agree with everyone's assessment that the departments need an audit and all the money needs to directly go to fixing the roads. I think a mixture of all of the above would be good.

SC has some of the cheapest gas in the country. I'd rather save money from not having to buy tires all the time and spend a little more on gas each year.

I was told by a person who does cost estimates and engineering for SCDOT that South Carolina
is 2nd in amount of miles of roads per capita in the US. The tax base for road repair puts the S.Carolinians in a dire predicament as funding for road/bridge repair and maintenance. Everyone I know, including myself, is guilty of complaining about our roads. But, in reality we are suffering mostly because of our small population.

To those who say we don't need so many paved roads, I say, I sure am glad to have one to get to my house. I live in a rural place and I think I should have the same kind of road to drive on as the urbanites.

An increase in gas tax could alleviate some of the burden. But, maybe less than 72% would be better.

Also the SCDOT is one of the largest DOT's in the country by means of miles of roads they are responsible for. Most states depend on counties to maintain roads but here in SC almost every major/minor route and even local streets are all maintained by the SCDOT. We also have one of the lowest gas taxes in the country. The DOT simply is not getting enough funding to support all of the needed road projects. Simply restructuring the DOT isn't going to magically fix all of the roads in this state that need repairing. It'll probably actually hurt progress.

"Lead auditor Brad Hanley said part of the issue is that roughly 25 percent of SCDOT’s funding is rerouted to other entities. That money often goes to various local planning councils or the State Transportation Infrastructure Bank, which will then use it towards new roads or widening projects."

Honestly don't see an issue with this. The money is still going to road projects funding.

I've spoken to Brad in detail about this.

May 11, 2017, 11:28 AM

He is right.

The SCDOT is a cluster of bureaucracy and slushfunds.

We won't get one road improved with a 72% tax. It will just cost more NEXT year when they come back and say they need more money.
