When you really think about this "paying players" stuff...

Aug 8, 2013, 3:44 PM

You've gotta ask yourself... Are we really doing these athletes any good by making them take Biology 101 and getting a sociology degree?

Why is Sammy Watkins and Jadeveon Clowney sitting in a classroom with people like you and me (or younger versions of you and me)?

These guys are athletes. Why not have a minor league system like baseball or golf? It's just weird when you really think about it.

what if the NFL and NBA were more like MLB, with farm teams

and kids getting drafted straight out of HS? then you'd get the guys like watkins and clowney bypassing college altogether and going straight to the pros, while college football and basketball were more like actual amateur sports.

FAT TAX NOW!

Maybe you have a point for those athletes specifically.

They are the exception though. Most of these guys are never going to make the NFL.

like most minor league baseball players?***

I would say most minor league baseball players...

went to college though. Without having any statistics on it it seems to me that the majority of those in the minor leagues went to college while the minority came straight from high school.

The minor league system doesn't replace college like it seems the OP is suggesting for football.

with the names he provided he's talking about guys

that would be drafted early if there were a minor league system(like baseball).

it'll never happen because the NCAA wont let it.

Aug 8, 2013, 4:23 PM

As soon as a minor league nba or nfl crops up they'd agree to pay players. NCAA Football and bball are their cash cows.

There's one already...

it's called the NCAA. The players play and get an education along with development and exposure to fans and NFL scouts.

If you are seriously considering them getting money rather than an education you've got your wires crossed. The time spent at a good university is time well spent. That's why almost every parent want their kid to go to college.

except for the stars that dont have to. see mlb and ncaab.

Aug 8, 2013, 4:38 PM

the kids that are going to be drafted high skip out. In ncaa bball they have to play a year which is ridonculous and then they enter the draft.

Because the money in college Bball isn't as much as FB. NCAA rules will never allow a FB player leave school after one year. That would kill the money cropped from FB.

Watkins could have played in the CFL out of high school!

Aug 8, 2013, 10:07 PM

He would have been paid about $50,000/year.

He would have had long bus trips to play in small stadiums with bad facilities, and no name coaches.

Instead he accepted a full ride worth $13,000/year in room and board and another $13,000/year in tuition. He plays in some of the most exciting stadiums in the WORLD. Fly on road trips (including places like Raleigh, NC). And has some of the best coaches in the World.
