Watching Mike Leach's offense

Oct 31, 2013, 11:20 PM

If he didn't coach for an extremely untalented team like Washington State, his offense would be awesome. If he can get a decent QB and receiver like he had a Texas Tech, he could build a nice program. It's a shame that the talent is so bad at WSU that he may not get a chance to coach for a bigger program.

so true. I see all of Wazzu's games out here

and i can tell you that if he had talent like some of the underwhelming offense schools like Georgia, LSU, Southern Cal, and others, it would be scary. The issue with Leach is that he is, and will always be, his own man....to the tenth power. He is not a schmoozer and he isn't going to do any press the flesh, backslapping type of BS. That makes him persona non grata at big schools who demand that type of personality out of their coaches. If he can recruit a lot of SoCal and Texas talent up there at Wazzu, he'll make a lot of noise. They've just dumped millions into facilities and they are an underdog mentality school who'll love Leach if he wins. If he wins, he'll dig up juco talent and all kinds of QB talent will want to play there and don't be surprised if another Welker and Crabtree come out of that school soon. Love him or not, that guy is an offensive lunatic.

Recruiting the kind of athletes he needs to run his system

to Pullman will be his biggest challenge.

Pullman, as I am sure you know, is on the southeastern boarder of Washington near Idaho and Oregon and pretty much out in the middle of nowhere.

Similar to Clemson, WSU is a land grant institution focusing on teaching agriculture, science, military science and engineering, and was originally called Washington Agricultural College and School of Science

Not a bad idea. He is a great offensive coach.

Never played college ball, don't think he played HS ball much if at all. He was a lawyer and one day told his wife he wanted to coach.

He goes into a game with only 7 plays written on a little sheet of paper and he takes away adds to it as the game progresses and he sees the weaknesses in the coverages.

His WR's routes are based on the alignment of the defenders and he expects his QBs to read it and react.

I would take Baylors coordinator in a minute. That offense is putting up the most points.

Phil Montgomery

Nov 1, 2013, 9:08 AM

is a very good OC who has spent almost his entire career coaching for Art Briles at the high school level, at the University of Houston and now at Baylor.

Interestingly, Chad Morris would later become the HC at Stevensville High School where Art Briles and Phil Montgomery coached together a few seasons earlier.
