Did suppression of 1st amendment ability to freely state even extreme and unpopular beliefs & viewpoints lead us to where we are today?

How direct is the correlation of the lid being put on powerful emotional expression then: to wide divisions and explosively violent trends across society today?

It may have added a bit to it, but IMHO, it is social media and the lack of critical thinking skills that has led to a willingness of a great percentage of our population to believe almost anything posted to twitter/FB as long as it meets their perceived political position. See QAnon, etc. I mean really, the basis of these beliefs are so out there in left field I don't see how anybody could believe it. Just think of the "mental mayhem" that that fellow went through when he showed up at that pizza joint in DC with a long gun and then discovered that there was no basement with child sex slaves in it. D.A.M.N.!!
