Was Fake FG play legal?

Oct 2, 2017, 8:20 AM

During VT's fake field goal, the holder's knee was on the ground when he made the shuttle pass. Is this legal? I know that there is an exception to the rule for being down while the player is holding the ball for the kicker. I have seen other fakes where the holder rises before he takes the snap.

Not saying you are wrong. I just don't know the rule about this.

The play was legal. There is an exception to the rule when a ball becomes dead if the team is in a kicking formation and the holder places the ball on the ground while having a knee on the ground. Same rule if the snap was high and the holder had to come off of his knee to catch the snap and goes back to his knee to set the ball.
Usually when you see a player rise from the holding position, you will notice that the kicker does not stay in the kicking position. If the kicker moves from his kicking position and is not behind the holder, then the play would be dead.

Ball Declared Dead
ARTICLE 3. A live ball becomes dead and an official shall sound his whistle
or declare it dead:
a. When it goes out of bounds other than a kick that scores a field goal after
touching the uprights or crossbar; when a ball carrier is out of bounds;
or when a ball carrier is so held that his forward progress is stopped.
When in question, the ball is dead (A.R. 4-2-1-II).
b. When any part of the ball carrier’s body, except his hand or foot, touches
the ground or when the ball carrier is tackled or otherwise falls and loses

FR-58 Rule 4 / Ball in Play, Dead Ball, Out of Bounds
body, except his hand or foot [Exception: The ball remains alive when
an offensive player has simulated a kick or at the snap is in position to
kick the ball held for a place kick by a teammate. The ball may be kicked,
passed or advanced by rule] (A.R. 4-1-3-I).

Important part: [Exception: The ball remains alive when
an offensive player has simulated a kick or at the snap is in position to

Exception: Like spiking isn't intentional grounding***
