Walk-Ons in Clemson History

Jan 28, 2013, 9:14 AM

Leaning on the more experienced T-Netter here,

Who is the best Walk-On player of all time at Clemson? I am sure it is some offensive lineman or something like that. But somebody you scratch your head at wondering why they were not initially offered a scholarship.

See, I forgot he walked on. I remember him struggling that freshman year and now look at him, one of the most money kickers we have had.

Danny Ford

He walked on the field for the first time as HC, no one expected much, but he proved them wrong.

recent good ones Phillip Price, and Tommy Sharpe. Tony Elliott was a walk on and he did ok. I think Rob Bodine started as a walk on. I thought Lee Brice was a walk on but his wiki page says otherwise

There was a safety back when Ford was the coach

Jan 28, 2013, 9:23 AM

He started on some good teams and may have been all ACC. I believe he was related to Rex Enright, but I can't remember the kid's name.

You are correct, but I believe he played for Charlie Pell. I remember in '78 against maryland he returned an interception about 90 yards for a touchdown.

Stan Rome

Jan 28, 2013, 9:32 AM

Stan Rome was a walk-on in football and was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. I think he stayed on their roster for a year or two.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

lol. Funny you didn't mention Stan played basketball

Jan 28, 2013, 10:30 AM

at Clemson also. He was drafted in the 4th round by the Cavaliers, but choose nfl football. What a great athlete. Shame his son went to uga.

Technically he walked on to football because he was already on bb ship.

Jan 28, 2013, 9:40 AM [ in reply to Steve Ryan from Monks Corner.4th string walk-on safety who ]

Steve Ryan first played against UGA in 1977. He was not on the roster, and it took Jim Phillips a few minutes to find out who he was.

He was the All ACC free safety in both 1977 and 1978.

Thomas Hunter a TE has to be considered....

Jan 28, 2013, 11:53 AM

Thomas played at a small private school, Pee Dee Academy, in high school and if memory serves me did not play his senior year there.

His family are life long Clemson people and Thomas walked on and earned a starting position and a scholarship. He played well over the years and I can still see him open in the back of the end zone for a winning TD against SC one year in a game we lost.

Thomas graduated with a high GPA and is representing Clemson well.

Bodine was the first name I thought of. Great defensive lineman on some dominant defenses. Didn't Danny Pearman start as a walk on?? Seem to remember an interview with him talking about it during one of the Citrus Bowl games in 87 or 88...

coming to see what Clemson fans have to say about the top undeclared this year. I'd imagine it's because we are in the running for most of them.

Things will settle down after signing day and we'll get back to our normal scrap over conference relignment and firing Jack and Brad.
