Re: Have you coughed up the antibiodics the put in your lungs?

Jan 11, 2013, 11:21 PM

Not yet, but I've got a pillow to hug for that event!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My first heart surgery was 1983, I was 32 yrs old then.

Jan 11, 2013, 11:30 PM

My second was 2000. I don't remember the coughing from the first one but the second one was unforgettable.

I would put my chest against the wall and my wife would push on my back to try and stop the violent movement of my broken and racked bones.

I hope and pray that you have an easier row to hoe than I did.

How old you are?

Jan 11, 2013, 11:31 PM

51 years old. Hasnt been alot of coughing yet.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure what brought all the pain.

Jan 11, 2013, 11:37 PM

I always believed it was my age (49 or so) and the fact that my bones didn't heal like they did earlier in life. I don't know, it may have been the extensive damage to the heart muscle.

You've had good fate to now so I'm praying it will continue well for you.

When 'open,' heart surgery is performed...

Jan 12, 2013, 9:28 AM

sternum the ribcage is jacked open (literally) and the lungs are collapsed and injected with antibiotics. The drug prevents pheumonia. The drugs must be coughed out. If you've ever had a foreign object deep in your lungs you've experienced the violence of the cough.

It happens shortly after the surgery so the sternum is not healed. It moves the unhealed broken breast bone. You ever broken a bone? Imagine a broken bone without a cast being tapped with a hammer.

I did a lot of research on bileaflet valves in grad school. I was testing a new design for a pulmonary valve replacement though, not aortic.
