This stuff fascinates me

I've got a friend that works for the Feds and this article sounds a lot like what he can describe of his job.

Pretty solid article.

But I disagree with the "Pot Paradox" part. Yes the cartels are business men. They didn't start increasing heroin production because of losses in the pot industry, but rather because of the growing demand. It was prescription opiates that got many Americans addicted. And cartels are all too happy to make the money. Legalization of marijuana in a few states may have cut into cartels profits temporarily, but even if it's wasn't legalized, cartels would have simply supplied both marijuana and heroin. But still a good read.

I'll ask my friend

It does seem plausible that the quality and ease of weed in the US would drop their sales.

With dabs and oils and wax and shatter being so potent now, I can see how Mexican weed isn't worth the risk/reward.

Don't ask him until you've smoked a bowl of hash together.

This is the only way he can give you a fair and unbiased answer.

will have to wait til he retires for that

He's pretty reasonable about the whole issue.

He's been saying for years that we'd see heroin in our perfect little world in Mt Pleasant because this is real.

It's actually pretty awesome listening to his professional take on all of this.

A friend's kid goes to Wando.

I think he's a senior. Anyway, he said heroin is getting really bad there.

Over Christmas, I had a chance to talk to a friends friend who is a retired sheriff and is now a DEA agent. He is on a narcotics task force, and he said 90% of what he sees is heroin cases. The rest is home meth labs, and some pot.

Very good read. Here's a good one from SI

Jan 26, 2017, 10:31 AM

Not nearly to the scale of El Chapo though of course, but pretty interesting story I wasn't familar with. http://www.si.com/longform/true-crime/randy-lanier-indycar-drug-smuggler/index.html

Random thought while reading through the Esquire article. Am I the only one who gets distracted when writers use profanity? Don't get me wrong, I am known to let it fly, so it's not profanity itself which bothers me, just when it is in print. Example from pretty early in the article: They've basically stopped growing the $h#t.

In all honesty, I think that's the difference between

college-trained journalists that put their time in with traditional print media and writers that came up in the blogoshpere world that are writing for an online audience. The new generation of writers tends to write less technically and more with a 'speaking voice'. It's a terrible fit for hard news, but I see more and more of it.
