Updated - Clemson's Dominance of National Champion Coaches

Oct 4, 2019, 9:31 AM

And then there was ONE!

This year, Clemson has continued its mastery over national title winning head coaches.

With Clemson's closer than expected WIN against Mack Brown's Tar Heels Saturday, there currently remains only ONE national championship winning coach since the 1980s to have won his last game against Clemson. Obviously, this statistic is subject to change each time Clemson faces another championship winning coach - but so far the Clemson Tigers have faced two title winners in 2019 this year and are not scheduled to face another one. Of course, Clemson could face another championship winning coach in the postseason and/or a new coach could be added to the list of title winners.

As of right now (October 2019), Clemson has made quite the lasting final impression on national title winners. Clemson is now 27-1 against every national title winning coach in his final or most recent game against Clemson. 27-1!! Before the BCS, there were a few years in which two teams were awarded the national title as determined by the AP and by the coach's polls. Those two polls before the BCS - then the BCS - then the CFP are included for identifying the title winners (no other rankings are included). There are also some title winning coaches who never faced Clemson.

Bottom Line: As of right now, only ONE national title winning coach of the last four decades won his last game against Clemson.

Here is the updated list:

Clemson: Academic Excellence! Athletic Excellence!

Dabo says we can't let Clemson beat Clemson every week

So are those games Clemson wins, or Clemson losses?

Just kidding around...great post! +1

The lone coach to beat us could be the worst coach on

Oct 4, 2019, 9:41 AM

the list, Larry Coker. He pretty much "inherited" his championship from Dennis Erickson. As Erickson's players filtered out of the program, Miami got worse each year, with Coker being bounced 5 years after winning the Natty.

The only reason that I don't unequivocally say that Coker is the worst, is that Gene Chizik is on the list, and definitely earned top bottom dog status. :)

Those two definitely look like misfits on this list

But I would consider Coker the least effective of the bunch. As you pointed out, he took an incredibly stacked program and managed to run it into the ground in a few short years.

Maybe we could somehow convince Coker to come out of retirement so Clemson could face him again. That way the one blemish on the list could be corrected.
