Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 9, 2017, 9:01 PM

Does not seem strong in SC (again)...out of the 39 offered thus far, only ONE is from SC (DE Zachh Pickens, TL Hanna). Imagine if we were located in a state where kids could "stay home" and play for us. Almost all of our offers are to GA, FL, and NC kids. Great that we are located right in the middle of such talent...but it stinks when our state cannot produce more than a couple 4 or 5 stars each cycle. SC has to develop better from within. How can this be attained? What needs to change???

I'm sure there will be more as this 2018 cycle winds down and ends in February .
The coaches also probably plan on having less work to do more often than not with any in state kids they like .

Re: Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 9, 2017, 9:08 PM

first, would have to question that we really have almost 40 offers out to '19 kids at this point. Sometimes kids take invitations to camp or to come visit as offers. we are pretty selective and slow to offer.
the "problem" is SC has a low population base. i believe there are more high schools in metro atlanta than there are in the state of SC. its simply a numbers game.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can see the numbers argument.

Good point.

Re: Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 9, 2017, 9:10 PM

There are only 4 SC kids ranked anything by 247 in 2019.

In GA there are almost 40 already.

With a slight tilt to the midlands with Northwestern. I think we get who we want over the next 3 years Instate with the NC in our back pocket.

Re: Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 9, 2017, 9:23 PM

This is why the coots have never accomplished much of anything in football. The in state talent gets split with us and they do not have that much appeal to out of state kids. We have more to offer. Most out of state kids see this which is why we go head to head with other schools for recruits more so than SC. I've tried to tell coots this for the last 20 years. This is why we have been so dominant in this rivalry with the exception of their little streak where we had a major coaching transition and there also happened to be a bumper crop of in state talent at the same time. Even with that they still had to stoop to oversigning and illicit benefits to get the upper hand. But like I said we have more appeal to out of state kids than they do. Always have and always will. Columbia is a dump. This is why we are a much better program historically particularly the modern era of CFB.

The Problem Lies Within

Jul 9, 2017, 10:00 PM

You see, most of the talented players are from Gaffney. The problem with Gaffney is that most of the players cannot pass a standardized test such as the SAT or ACT to even enroll at Clemson. It's a pity because we pass up on a great deal of talent. Of course, there was that one kid from Gaffney that beat up his girlfriend and got kicked off of the team.

SC produces more 4+5 stars per capita than most other states. Just happens to be surrounded by other high-talent states, many of which have a little more money or focus on football in their small towns.

Re: Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 10, 2017, 7:02 AM

Yes. My earlier post was more about quantity. We have a low population but we are impressive in what we produce per capita. Someone posted an article a while back saying we were like 6th in the nation per capita in producing NFL talent. The upstate is a hot bed for D1 football players down the 85 corridor. That being said the #'s just aren't there to make two D1 schools competitive. You must go beyond the borders to build a sustainable top notch program.Clemson is much better at getting top out of state talent than SC. It's been that way for as long as I can remember.

and we've always been able to recruit good in GA, FL, NC. So the lack of quantity doesn't effect us at all.

its a good thing the coaches recruit

Jul 10, 2017, 9:52 AM

SC, NC, GA, and I think Tennessee as one big state!

I read many times where they look at the landscape and how easily accessible it is for our coaches from Clemson to get to any of those states and that why we recruit that as one big territory.

Re: Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 10, 2017, 9:55 AM

Nothing needs to change... talent levels will ebb and flow in any state, but we have pipelines and pull in all of the South. If you look at the stats, most (or a solid majority) of the college talent comes from the South (NC, GA, SC, FLA, AL, Tenn, LA, etc. Texas* - if you count that big ole state the size of a small country.)

You do notice trends in states:
(in past few cycles)
-FLA receivers, DBs
-GA, QBs, multiple positions.
-NC, receivers, one phenom named Big Dex
-Ohio, O linemen.
-Tenn, backs, receivers.

This may correlate to the position coaches who claim or work those recruits in their selected states.

Dabo and Co. look at the Carolinas and Georgia as one state. There is multiple interviews where he lays out his recruiter philosophy that it's all one. His openness, vision, communication, track record, team/coaches gives Clemson pull across state borders.

The best is yet to come...

Re: Unfortunately 2019 recruiting...

Jul 10, 2017, 11:37 AM

Yea this 18 class in SC has a lot more top recruits then normal. I think what also hurts SC in having big number of recruits is we don't have 6A or 7A schools like Georgia or Florida. Sc doesn't have those huge high schools that are more like colleges. Are biggest HS are like dorman and those schools so I think recruiting services overlook a lot of talent bc they are from smaller schools. Just a thought
