Cigarette smoking rates are slipping while the number of people who vape is rising. Consequently, state cigarette tax receipts have also gone down.

As you might expect, lawmakers are now considering a tax that would significantly reduce the profits of these vaping shops. The new legislation would also require sellers of e-cigarettes to be licensed by the state, pay a fee, keep the vaping products in secure displays, and have child-resistant caps.

Obviously the proposed legislation is heavily opposed by small business supporters who say adding the tax would put e-cigarette shops out of business by effectively making vapor products more expensive and lessening their appeal compared to traditional cigarettes.
