Turn back the clock a number of years

And you can really see the importance of this game. A Tiger win would mean NO MORE RAT HATS. A time to celebrate. Many of the old traditions surrounding this game are forgotten. How sad!

That’s another one! Remember trying to climb the greased flag pole in front of Tillman Hall to put your rat hat on top?

You only did that after several Old Milwaukee’s!!!

The hats would be thrown on the field w/ Big Thursday win

but if we lost, you had to wear them the rest of the semester.

I was way too young to be involved, but that's what I see in my mnd's eye.

Big Thursday games against SCAR were closer to mid-season (during the State Fair) and always in Columbia at least until the very end of the tradition when they finally moved the game to the end of the season.

My father has a game ball from the last Big Thursday game, most of the '59 team signed it. He painted the score and "Last Big Thursday Game" on it, I'll take a picture of it the next time I visit. The story goes that the Carolina punter shanked a punt into the stands and my father caught the ball and hid it under his overcoat beneath his seat. He said that the highway patrol came looking for the ball but never questioned him. Dad was friends with many of the football players and had them sign the ball. I grew up with it sitting on a shelf in our den.
