Swinney has no clarity in "frustrating" kicking situation

Who will kick for Clemson Saturday night? It might be a game-time decision after head coach Dabo Swinney watches the players warm up. Seventh-ranked Clemson starts a big three-game stretch against conference opponents Saturday against Georgia Tech. Full Story »

Gardocki, Sims, Treadwell, Obed, Others

Somehow Ford and his assts could recruit kickers and punters OR talented kickers and punters attended Clemson due to program's status.

Hard to say why Dabo's team's are so challenged on special teams including kickers and punters. Though punting has picked up this year.

In 1980, Georgia roughed punter David Sims and tore up his knee, and he was out for the remainder of the season. That injury contributed to us losing a couple of games too. Not many still remember it.

Oh yeah, I watched those games David Sims punted in - you needed to see that. He could make it fly, sky high, and pin 'em in back deep. No rugby kicks in those days.

And Obed Ariri kicked points on auto pilot. He led in offensive scoring. I remember that, after one of the home games, they had to run him over to the soccer field in time to start that game for us.

Donald Igwebuike (hardest to pronounce of any player we've ever had) also phenomenal as a kicker. National Championship team in '81.

I learned how to pronounce his name listening to Jim Phillips, but we usually just called him iggy biggy.

the gap between high school performance

Oct 24, 2017, 6:49 PM [ in reply to Gardocki, Sims, Treadwell, Obed, Others ]

and college performance is huge. Sometimes you recruit a kid and he just can't transition. It's just not as easy as Tnet makes out.

Pinion, Catanzaro, Teasdall, Huegel, Lakip

were not so challenged. Lakip's issue was drugs not talent.

Any team would have a problem when the kicker is

We do have a punter and kicker starting in the NFL

I felt we've been pretty decent at those positions the past few years.

I just gotta believe the Tigers will figure this out. Done it before, can do it again.

If the situation really is that unclear...

Oct 25, 2017, 8:55 AM

... then there's a clear solution. Run a play on 4th down if we are past the 40, no matter the distance, especially if KB is all the way healthy.

If you have a 16 versus a dealer 10, you hit every time. You lose less often over the long haul by hitting than by standing. Similar concept: Let's say you only make 1 out of 3 FG's (1 point per attempt avg). Assuming KB is healthy, let's conservatively say you convert a 4th down half the time and go on to score a TD a third of the time after that. The average points from going for it plus the remaining progress is 7/(2x3) = 7/6 ~ 1.2 points per attempt. 1.2 > 1. Hit on that 16.

You don't always hit a 16 against a 10. Depends on the count. You do it about 92% of the time.

Place Kickers College

Oct 25, 2017, 5:22 PM

Honestly, recruiting good kickers has taken a big hit all across the nation.
It's just so easy to bring in 2 or 3 walk ons every year, and not really
evaluate who you have and what they are capable of.

For one, kick-offs are from the 35 in college, not the 40 like in HS.
Next, many kickers kick FGs in HS from a kicking block. Not from the ground
like in college/Pro. And that's a huge, huge adjustment for any kicker.

Kicking FGs is a repetitive motion; Over & over & over...
Although, some game pressure as well- BUT!! Ya have to wonder just how much
some of these guys are really putting in to it.

Good kickers need to be come more of priority.

He said "past the 40 yard line". I think he was referring to Field Goals. But what I think he actually meant was past 40 yards. So, that would be the the 23 yard line. But the kicker missed 2 FG attempts against Syracuse, both inside the 23 yard line. One was not much longer than an extra point. Absolutely terrible. Championship teams can't have that.
