Top 10 Wide Receivers at Clemson since 1975:
Apr 15, 2015, 12:05 PM
|
|
1. Sammy Watkins 2. Nuk Hopkins 3. Jerry Butler (It's real hard for me to put him behind anyone but the two in front of him had much more productive careers and ended with such exclamation points in 2013 Peach and 2014 Orange. They did play in pass offenses though compared to JB not getting as many opportunities) 4. Rod Gardner 5. Perry Tuttle 6. Terry Smith 7. Aaron Kelly 8. Derek Hamilton 9. Antwuan Wyatt 10. Chansi Stuckey
Honorable mention: Tony Horne, Kevin Youngblood, Terrence Roulhac, Airese Currie, Jacoby Ford, Brian Wofford

was so yes. his catches amounted to almost 50% of the total completions his last 2 years. almost 60% in his last year alone; i'd say that's stat based.
i'm just old enough to really remember dwight from those days and thought he was a huge part of those teams, but perhaps it's that i remember steve fuller mostly - #4 is still one of my favorite ever tigers.

LOL! Everyone thinks Dwight Clark was a great college player based solely what he did in the pros. He basically did nothing in college. Good third down receiver, maybe.

17 catches equates to 50-60+ in todays' offenses. he was every bit the wr and a better football player than some of those guys on joseph's list.

Dwight was a dang good football at CU but did you see the names on that list?it wasn't just the NFL for Dwight either. He became a great pro. He was a good basketball player too.

it's a really good list you've put together and it's very difficult to project a player like dwight, no doubt.

Dwight was also the first name that came to mind when I read this post. And although our offense continued to rely heavily on three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust, during his career at Clemson (at least while I was there) Dwight Clark enjoyed the same rep as Nuk and Sammy did during theirs. Can't argue with the "top ten" as presented, but in my playbook he deserves a little more than a footnote. Thanks deadsolid - perfect reply.

There is no doubt that Bryant was a great WR at Clemson

And made alot of special plays but he really only had one productive season. If He played his first 2 years like he did his junior year, or if he stayed for his senior season and improved from his junior season then he would definitely be one of the top 10 WR's at Clemson imo. He just had maturity issues and not a very good work ethic his FR and SO seasons. Plus he was overshadowed by SW and nuk, but he would of got his stats if he had a better work ethic his early years.

If Martavis continues on the pace he's on for the next 5 years in the league, does he sneak in there? Or is this only production at Clemson?
The guy obviously had some discipline things while he was here...but one wonders if that would have been the case if he was "the guy." Hard to be that behind #1 and #2 on your list.

to bring out the cigars on the coots after the Tigers were blasted in the first half and then we shut then down in the second to seal The Comeback. Not many single plays in Clemson history beat that one.

If he had played in an offense like today's, his numbers would've been insane. Legitimate 4.3 speed and great hands. You made a good list. I will say that Mike Williams and Tay Scott will have to be added when all is said and done.

Making that monumental catch vs BC would have IMHO been one
Apr 17, 2015, 6:04 PM
|
|
of the most important catches in CU history ... capping a huge comeback to beat Matt Ryan and ranked BC in dramatic fashion, putting us in the ACC Title Game for the first time.
It was a tremendous opportunity missed, but if he makes that catch, I think I might bump Rod Gardener, who made a LOT of nice catches, but whose main claim to fame is his own "The Catch" ...
With both Kelly and Gardener having career catches like that, it would be tough.
Maybe move Tuttle up to #4 and let Kelly and Gardner share 5th place?
Moot point anyway, Huh?
