Honestly as a fan I am not complaining. The thing is you usually look for the taller recievers to run a 40 time like that and then the "slot" guys who are 5'10 or 5'11 to run the 4.3 4.4 times. His brother is on the team and I have heard good things so I wouldn't be mad if we signed him.

Re: Route Running Ability

It's Ryan's route running skills that make him a superb slot guy. 247 says that he "may" run the best routes in the country and he is probably the best slot receiver in the southeast for this cycle. Sounds good to me.

Would love to have a Wes Welker

Why would anybody complain about that time?

Jul 7, 2012, 10:39 PM

He was in the 98th percentile for Tom's sake.

Besides, 40 times can vary widely anyway, from one run to another, from one "track" to another. Based on scouting reports, all HS WRs run 4.3 forties. I don't believe it, but it creates an unrealistic expectation nonetheless.

I don't worry about 4.4 vs 4.5 40's much either. As a receiver, or anyone on the football field, you are rarely running in a straight line for 40 yards. I worry about shuttle times and change of direction with acceleration. If he can get a CB's hips turned and cut quickly, he can separate very, very quickly. That is what you look for.

Jerry Rice ran a 4.71 at the NFL combine.***
