Three nice things from last night's game...

Mar 19, 2014, 9:14 AM

...aside from the win, of course.

1. Decent officiating: I know folks were getting on the refs for taking so long to confirm that the GSU player never felt an elbow, but they were letting both teams play. I don't mind a little extra time, as long as the result is the correct call ... which it was.

They also kept things from flaring up late without becoming the focal point of the final minutes. After what we saw the past few weeks it was refreshing.

2. Decent TV commentators: They didn't gush over either team, and they made some salient comments about the flow of the game, how each team was working and seemed to be enjoying being in Littlejohn. Part of that might have been...

3. An active crowd: Obviously it wasn't the biggest crowd of the year, but the folks there seemed to be having a great time. Made me wish I could have gotten to the game. The GSU folks were vocal and enthusiastic, if a bit testy in the second half. Good environment, great win.

Better days ahead.

Only real awful call that was missed was Blossomgame's

Mar 19, 2014, 9:16 AM

where he got hurt, he was fouled hard there.

GSt has some great shooters, imagine where this team would be if we had one of them on our team...

Yes I would say a good crowd, we decided to be adventurous and sit next to the GSU band and in front of quite a few of their fans. We went back and forth all night on the dunks, fouls and questionable (not many) calls. I Even saw a couple of their fans escorted out (a little too much pregame festivities), but after all was said and done their fans congratulated us and wished us well going forward...Props to our fans for being loud and proud, I know I was and have no voice left to prove it! :)

Well, I only saw one person get escorted out and he saluted Clemson fans #1. The foul that didn't get called on #5 was horrible. Refs were okay except for that one guy and I think everyone knows which one he was, but I really enjoyed the game and the fans that I was around were loud and proud. But they were two guys (50ish) sitting in front of me and I don't even think they had a pulse.

P.S. The acting job by RH #55 was real laughable.

Seems to me

If the refs determined there was no contact but in fact it was a total acting job they should have "T"ed him up for delay of game or something.

My take

Mar 19, 2014, 9:52 AM

I think the first elbow probably grazed the nose of the defender. The defender felt contact (and was moving to avoid the elbow) and decided to embellish it. And once so little contact occurred he looked genuinely embarrassed. He was motioning to the bench that he was fine after he got up, and was refusing to come off the court. And after his acting job he wasn't whining to the ref or coach.

It doesn't excuse the embellishment, but I've seen worse, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were very minimal contact between the first elbow and the nose. Certainly not enough to be a foul, especially with the handchecking they were allowing at the time, but I think the player just felt a bit of contact and thought he played for Duke for a second. But he did look embarrassed as heck afterwards.

were those Sun Belt refs?

Mar 19, 2014, 9:40 AM

they were chatty with the GSU players a couple of times

but i think they called a pretty good game

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i was shocked at the size of the crowd

Mar 19, 2014, 9:48 AM

I am sure the players and Coach were pleased. All things considered, i didn't expect to see that many people in there. made me proud. it was an excellent 'thank you' for our team and what they accomplished this year.

Officiating was solid.

Mar 19, 2014, 9:55 AM

They, for the most part, let them play. That, of course, did magnify a few calls on both teams that were odd. The foul call on KJ near the end of the first half out beyond the 3 pt arc was the touchiest of touch fouls, but I also thought the KJ slam / foul on the rebound sequence was oddly called as well. Seems the foul would've HAD to have occurred prior to the shot for the sequence to make any sense, but it was close.

All in all a good day for the zebras.

And the crowd was MUCH better than I imagined it would be, and I think that was helped a but by the GAST folks showing up as it increased the energy in the building.

Hopefully kids will be back for next game-other thing was

Mar 19, 2014, 10:03 AM

people could sit closer to the court, which made it look and feel like high energy. Good game!!

The foul that was called when KJ dunked

Mar 19, 2014, 10:29 AM [ in reply to Officiating was solid. ]

was Noko getting pushed in the back under the basket, and it was a good call.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know it was a GAST player fouling Noko

Mar 19, 2014, 10:32 AM

But the contact and whistle looked like they were before the put-back by KJ. Thought we got a beneficial call there.
