Think the Braves will put an OCULUS in their new stadium?

Absolutely ridiculous to tear down a 20 year old stadium as nice as Turner Field!! Yes, it's located in the ghetto & they want to get out 'where the money' is in Cobb County, but don't come whining to the tax payers to foot the bill. BTW, this goes for the Falcons who are doing the same thing.

"Whining"?
Nov 13, 2013, 9:00 AM

Cobb County has reportedly presented the Braves with a very nice offer to provide 2/3 of the stadium funding. There's no "whining" to it. If taxpayers have an issue, they should take it up with local elected officials in Cobb County, not the Braves. The Braves are only taking what's being offered to them.

Braves never wanted their stadium following Fulton Co to

be built in that area but politics and race decided that for them....city of Atlanta caved to pressure from the neighborhood groups and built the Olympic Stadium/TF there. There are a few challenges to that site that were never going to change....
1. It's extremely difficult to get to...the maze of streets you have to drive through to get off of the downtown connector to the ballpark from the north is awful. Around the capitol building...back over the connector...past the Holiday Inn. Traffic nightmare. 2. Marta never had the vision to build a stop to TF. They came up with a bus from Five Points to the stadium and back. 3. Parking wasn't adequate at the stadium. The parking was also owned by the city of Atlanta so Braves received no revenue from it. Off site parking is sketcky at best in the neighborhoods. 4. The neighborhoods around the ballpark are scary....no way around it. I've walked through there with my wife and my head was on a swivel the entire time.

Generate the ticket revenue necessary to raise payroll. Attendance has been stagnant over the last several years, and so has the payroll, as a result.

Braves fans were elated when the organization signed Uggla and BJ Upton. Uggla and Upton are both career .250 hitters. I don't think anyone could have envisioned they'd both hit well below .200

Uggla is probably a lost cause...

Hopefully BJ can try to right his ship. That said, Uggla was a lot better over the last couple of years than BJ was last year.
The Braves will attempt to trade Uggla this off-season. Obviously, it'll be another couple of years before they can even entertain doing so with BJ.

Wasn't there speculation of an Uggla/Brandon Phillips trade

Phillips would certainly be an upgrade defensively over Uggla

Reds would want some value in return, and Uggla ain't that.

That trade would probably have to include prospects...

and I'm not sure how much the Braves would be willing to give up just to deal Uggla. I think Phillips also makes a good bit more money than Uggla so the Braves payroll would definitely increase.

Team X gets Dan Uggla
Braves get low-level prospect you've never heard of Braves pay $18-20 million of the $26 million still owed to Uggla.
The Braves could sweeten the pot with a prospect of their own, and have to pay less of Uggla's salaray.

Uggla has never really hit for average but he manages to get on base and drives in runs, and that's what he brings to the table offensively. That said, I wasn't overly concerned when his average statted falling. It's the decline in his HR's, OBP and RBI's that is the most concerning.
History supports that last year was an anomaly and totally out of character for Upton.

over the past 2 yrs...his OBP last year was only .309...he struck out a 1/3 of the time he came to the plate. His total bases were almost 1/2 his career year of 2010....299 vs 162.

Can't argue with your thoughts but......
Nov 13, 2013, 10:13 AM
|

I live on the north side of the perimeter around Atlanta and it's a pain in the ### for me to go down to Turner Field to a game - will be much easier/nicer to go to the new stadium.
I have to agree from a cost/usage point of view that moving from Turner Field and building a new Georgia Dome for the Falcons don't make any sense.

The city says that there is already a stream of revenue
Nov 13, 2013, 10:16 AM

In place to finance the Falcons stadium (hotel/motel tax). There is no such stream of revenue for what the Braves were needing, so the city would have had to go into debt to the tune of a couple hundred million dollars.

I know I'd rather drive to Cobb County rather than all the way down to Fulton County to watch the Braves and I attend about a dozen games each season.
