Virginia Tech band

For those who were at the game, does VT's band just play drums as loud as they can when they are on defense to make noise? It always sounds like that is all they are doing, but I have never seen VT in person. I know a lot of bands play music on defense to fire up crowd and make noise, but those schools also make an effort to have a melody.
