Do political ads work on you?

Jul 7, 2020, 6:50 PM

Have you ever seen an ad and just thought “you know, I changed my mind....I’m voting for that guy”.

Never have I thought that, but I’m also unfazed by car, beer, auto insurance, cell phone, etc. ads.

Maybe they are more effective on the smaller scale, like local elections? Just curious.

Local, sure. Otherwise i'd know nothing about them.***

No, but I am not on the fence as so many are. Its the people on the fence that swing an election.

Only local races work on me

Candidates don't spend billions on them if

Jul 7, 2020, 7:01 PM

They didn't work

Politicians spend billions on a lot of things that don’t work.

no sir

tons of info on the innerwebz to make a decision, talk radio for the local stuff

That’s not really how they’re intended to work.

Jul 7, 2020, 7:33 PM

The more common intended effect is to summon a gradual subconscious shift via repetition. That’s why there’s so dammmmm many of them.

And with that, I just used something I learned in my marketing major for the first time in a decade. Fist pump.

Jul 7, 2020, 9:09 PM

lol nice. Yea, I do pick up on that strategy.

I also focus on other parts of the ad like the buzzwords, cadence, background scenery. I wish I had a dollar every time the Obama campaign said “forward”.

They work on everyone here.

Jul 7, 2020, 11:51 PM

In some way, shape, or form, even if we don't realize it. I'm certain that's the case for me as well.

Effective, persistent marketing campaigns work on everyone.

Otherwise, they wouldn't spend millions on them.

No

Jul 8, 2020, 8:43 AM

As others have said, I’m sure the repetition gets in your head.

I’d much rather see them put the money to good use. Support a cause and donate the money there to get my attention.

The negative ads are the worst, don’t tell me your opponent is a swamp dweller, tell me what you can actually do.

But again, I’d rather see the money used for good.

It shouldn’t take a billion dollar “war chest” to run an election.

I've sometimes voted against a candidate because I felt

their campaign was overly negative.
