Report: Texans exercise $17.3 million option on Deshaun Watson

One for two isn't that bad I guess. The Houston Texans moved on from franchise receiver but now have picked up 's fifth-year option on his rookie contract worth Read Update »

Should be simple for Watson...

Pay me and get rid of OBrien... or I take any other reasonable offer and walk

I believe I would have my agent to start talking with other teams. O'Brien is not the coach he needs. If he stays, it would have to be into the 140 to 150 million deal for a maximum of 5 years and bring back my best receiver or no deal.

I'm sure he appreciates the Clemson family's love and concern.

Problem is they cant pay DW, Nuk, and Tunsil max contracts. That is why Nuk is gone. I am not a fan of O'Brien but that is the reality. I think he is a New England guy who thinks I will keep Brady and mix and match everything else.

I'm betting that Nuk wouldn't go back to Texas even if ask!!!

I completely agree...

Coach BOB has established that he is neither a good coach nor GM

BOB is a good coach, he has won his division 4 of the 6 years he's been there, finished 2nd another year

I agree 100% about the team payroll. I'm also not as hard on BOB as so many on here, and agree with your post after this one about his resume at Houston as well. However, I have issues getting around two things with the Hopkins trade.

1) Wasn't Hopkins signed for another 3 years or so at a pretty fair salary for his production? Sure, he may have eventually held out for more, but odds are they probably were another year or two away from him doing that as he wasn't about to sit for 3 years. To add to that point, they took on a pretty large amount of salary by getting David Johnson in return so they really didn't save much over the next couple of years.

2) It's hard to get around what they got in return for Hopkins. David Johnson was really good a few years ago when he was healthy, but he's had a very hard time staying healthy, and it seems hard to imagine he's suddenly going to get more durable at 28 years old. He'll turn 29 during the upcoming season btw. Besides that, the got a 2nd round pick, and swapped 4th round picks. If Minnesota was able to get a 1st round pick in return for Diggs, then there's no reason to think Houston couldn't have gotten a 1st round pick for Hopkins in addition to another 2-3 draft picks.

I had the payroll portion of this reply mixed up with another poster above.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I respectfully disagree

Apr 28, 2020, 3:34 PM [ in reply to He was winning games with Brandon Weedon and Blake Osweiller ]

He is an Idiot! To get rid of Nuke and get absolutely Nothing for him.He should have been fired on the Spot! He is not much of a Head Coach either. He may be a decent OC, but he has no Idea how to run the whole Team. He has givin away most of the Texans future for nothing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Won his division four out of six years Ace and Watson was QB

Apr 29, 2020, 12:33 AM

on only two of those teams

BoB is an OK coach but he's way out of his depth as a GM

Apr 29, 2020, 2:59 PM

He's made about four completely head-scratching moves in the last two years alone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The moves haven't been great, but he did get rid of two

Apr 30, 2020, 9:25 PM

people who were a "lockerroom distraction" and he got a franchise LT to watch Watson's blindside...He wants top build around Deshaun and it is what it is, feelings will get hurt and eggshells will get cracked, but the band aid is off now

You're under the assumption we wants to leave Houston,

150% right.

No doubt. BOB is a wild card.

DW4... just do well enough to secure your future

Apr 28, 2020, 10:55 AM

And keep the Texans from having the #1 pick next year in the event that you go somewhere else

Re: DW4... just do well enough to secure your future

Apr 28, 2020, 10:58 AM

The option being picked up was for the 2021 season so he has at least 2 more years in Houston.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Texans should be coming to the table with a new contract

Apr 28, 2020, 11:47 AM

offer sometime in the next year before that 2021 extension kicks in anyway. Mahomes is obviously expected to get a new deal after next season and Watson should as well.

That makes it trickier for him to get away from BoB and the Texans. He can sign a new contract for 2021 if he stays but if he wants to leave he likely has to play in 2021 on the 5th year option and then leave as a free agent and get the big deal a year later for the 2022 season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The Texans should be coming to the table with a new contract

Apr 28, 2020, 1:29 PM

I agree. It will come down to if he is willing to risk life changing money to get out of Houston. If he stays healthy he could get more money and pick his spot. If not he could miss out on from what i have seen $130 million guaranteed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he already has life changing money***

Re: The Texans should be coming to the table with a new contract

Apr 29, 2020, 12:13 PM [ in reply to The Texans should be coming to the table with a new contract ]

I’m not an expert on NFL contracts, but I actually believe he has at least 4 years left at Houston even if he doesn’t sign long term. After this year and next, I think they can franchise tag him for at least 2 years. He would make a lot of money under the franchise tag, but that is basically going to force Watson to sign a new contract to get the $100+ mil guaranteed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They technically can do that, but they wont

Apr 29, 2020, 2:58 PM

Players hate the franchise tag these days and using it on the star QB and face of the franchise would just be a huge slap in the face to Watson. A lot of star players in recent years have threatened to hold out if they get tagged.

Dear Deshaun

Apr 29, 2020, 4:09 PM

Under BOB

- You took more sacks than any other QB in the league (2018)
- Your star receiver was just traded for peanuts (Hopkins)
- You lack any true offensive weapons to compliment your passing skills
- Your Oline is still garbage
- You won't last 4 more years under Bill OBrien

The money will come - your health will not. Ditch Texas ASAP.
