Strange scheduling..

New Mexico State will play two football games before most teams play even one.

They play on 8/25, then 5 days later on 8/30.

AND they play Liberty twice this year.

They play Liberty twice next year too

Original post got me curious. Apparently NMSU and Liberty are both FBS Independents this year which I imagine makes scheduling a challenge.

Liberty's schedule also has some quirks, like they play at New Mexico and at NMSU in back-to-back weeks this year. I wonder if their team will even bother to fly back home in between.

It's not entirely out of the ordinary, although still not ideal. Hawaii did this last year, they played "week 0" and then again the friday of week 1, so they could get to 0-2 in a hurry and throw out any hope of a bowl game before september

I think teams that do that end up having 2 bye weeks in the year. And those teams generally switch to wednesday or thursday night games at some point in the season so having a good week off before that starts is i guess good
