say you've gota a car that calls for 91 octane gasoline, but pump don't seem to ever have 91....could you (not that I would make this sort of effort, but...) pump half a tank of 89 and half a tank of 93 to average out to 91??
is gas like maths?

I've been told thats how they do it at the pumps; but I tend to disbelieve that story.
I'd just put all 93 in it. If its a newer car you could just run 87 in and it won't kill it; it just won't have all the power it should as the engine's computer will automatically ###### the ignition timing if it begins to pre-ignite.

a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8L Supercharged V-6
210,000 miles later, it has never seen anything other than 87 Octane. Still runs like a champ.

I'm not talking about rods knocking I'm talking about fuel knocks.
Since octane is a measure of a fuel's ability to prevent knocking by lowering it's heat range (making it burn cooler), I'd try a straight 87 then work my way up until it quit knocking.
If you can't hear a distinctive knock while the engine is running (wait, that's not a stupid as it sounds) and the engine shuts off when you return the key to the off position (see, I told you it wasn't as stupid as it sounds), you'll be OK with the lower octane.
