SRS lungey kweshun that I coulda googled but decided not to

Jan 13, 2015, 2:45 PM

say you've gota a car that calls for 91 octane gasoline, but pump don't seem to ever have 91....could you (not that I would make this sort of effort, but...) pump half a tank of 89 and half a tank of 93 to average out to 91??

is gas like maths?

please to be responding lungily.

I'll wang up and glisten

There is actually a calculation that you can use.

Jan 13, 2015, 2:47 PM

Basically, it should end up looking like this:

Yes. Maybe.

Jan 13, 2015, 2:48 PM

I've been told thats how they do it at the pumps; but I tend to disbelieve that story.

I'd just put all 93 in it. If its a newer car you could just run 87 in and it won't kill it; it just won't have all the power it should as the engine's computer will automatically ###### the ignition timing if it begins to pre-ignite.

Jan 13, 2015, 2:53 PM

I've never seen anything but 87, 89, and 93.

They have more 91 out west

Jan 13, 2015, 3:59 PM

not many 93. 85, 87, 91 mostly.

Maybe gas is more expensive out there?

Jan 13, 2015, 4:51 PM

The 93 might be too expensive to sell much of.

You can make yer own...

Jan 13, 2015, 3:06 PM

3 parts Wild Turkey 101
2 parts jet fuel
1 part nitroglycerin

I haven't tried it yet, but I'd wear one of these just in case.

I have a car that calls for 93 Octane gas

Jan 13, 2015, 9:01 PM

a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3.8L Supercharged V-6

210,000 miles later, it has never seen anything other than 87 Octane.
Still runs like a champ.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Has anyone on this bored ever heard an engine knock?

Jan 14, 2015, 5:46 AM

I'm not talking about rods knocking I'm talking about fuel knocks.

Since octane is a measure of a fuel's ability to prevent knocking by lowering it's heat range (making it burn cooler), I'd try a straight 87 then work my way up until it quit knocking.

If you can't hear a distinctive knock while the engine is running (wait, that's not a stupid as it sounds) and the engine shuts off when you return the key to the off position (see, I told you it wasn't as stupid as it sounds), you'll be OK with the lower octane.
