I thought you always scheduled a sure fire win for Homecoming. When I was in high school, we were everyone's homecoming opponent even if they were the visitors and we were the home team.

Most schools don't like to schedule homecoming in September- so this is really their only chance since they don't play at home until UNC the last week of the year. You usually put homecoming on a winnable game to drive up attendance on a game that likely draws less. Clemson would be one of their highest grossing games so I doubt they would want to use it there. I would blame the ACC scheduling and the Thursday night match up against Louisville.

I never read any level of disrespect, etc. into these things. The school may just be giving the alumni an opportunity to have a great day AND get to see the reigning champs. In fact, you could make the argument that scheduling Clemson would draw out more alumni to the game
