child, this child becomes your "stepchild". If you and this spouse divorce, is her child still your "stepchild"? I'm curious because a friend of mine is dating someone and he says she has one child and a stepchild.

it really depends on how established/deep/long the relationship was with the stepchild.

I have a friend that had an absentee parent since before birth, parent remarried when 2, and was in college when they separated. They still interact as if it was a biological parent (actually avoids the "step" label), but I would understand if the parent clarified that to a new beau.

Backing up a tad...

But...don't you have to be single before getting married...generally speaking?

Well, you affirmed 'generally', but...that eliminates 'step' from the equation, too! ;)

Well it’s possible she may have legally adopted the stepchild - depending on state law.

I've never had a stepchild but I can tell you this.

You can't divorce a child.

I know a couple that were married for over 30 years, and the man helped raise the woman’s son from the age of 3. Now that they’re divorced the now grown son still interacts with his stepdad regularly. There is no doubt they still consider each other step dad/son.

I’ve been a stepdad for someone from age 4-19. I’m still married, but I would never stop considering him my stepson if my marriage were to end.

Length of marriage would definitely have a lot to do with that relationship I would think to be able to say if he should still consider that child his step-child.

I too have a step child BUT never consider her a step child. She is my daughter. PERIOD!
I think she considers me her father as well and she is now 32 years old. Her mother is a hottie at 63. :)

If they feel very close to that child then YES! Definitely
The biological mother may not be a part of the child's life and the step mother may be her only mother figure. The step mother divorced the father of the child not the child.
