Why call a play to the short side of the field in that situation?

Valid question. Possibly due to lack of situational recognition.

Because the D.C. don't think you will do it. The D strength was set to wide side. You want to run into strength or run to short side? It's kind of a wash.

Makes some sense, but that does not mean that TE had to run out of bounds.

Most of y'all won't remember but Danny's teams used to do this all the time with the Option. It usually worked

Of course for ND either side was their strong side. Wish we would have trusted our receivers to get open and catch the ball.

I remember. Ford’s teams also were a master of killing the clock.

Ah, yes... I remember that consecutive 3 year stretch in the 80's when we lost to the ###### Heads. We went into the game 5-0, 6-0, or maybe 6-1, or whatever, and ranked in the top ten, and they were like 1-5, 2-4, 2-5, or whatever, and unranked, and they blew our socks off. Three years in a row. I have a good friend who's a Nancy State fan and he was so "proud" to rub it in. At the same time, I believe we finished each of those years 10-2, with a couple victories over Penn State and Oklahoma in the Citrus Bowl...?

Because that was the side with the only lineman who can hold a block

Would one first down have won it ? Can't remember how many time outs they had.
