The real difference in being in the ACC versus the SEC

May 1, 2012, 3:24 PM

In the ACC, when you are found to have broken some rules, you have your conference slap you with additional penalties (unless you're UNC of course).

In the SEC, when you are found to have broken some rules, your Commissioner sends you the "Self Imposing Penalties for Dummies" handbook that outlines how to essentially give the NCAA the middle finger and they thank you for it.

The ACC's problem was they hired a commissioner from one of the member schools. That's like asking Col. Sanders to guard chickens. Curious to see what punishment Swoffie doles out to Miami...particularly since they're in the same division as UNC.

Right, because Florida, Tenn, and Georgia will suck forever right?

IIRC, those three schools have won a combined 8 or so BCS bowl games, with 3 BCS championships under their belt (Tenn, and Florida twice). Which... is both more than the entire ACC combined, multiple times over. ACC has only won a single BCS bowl game, right?

Really? Didn't the 2nd place team in the East beat the Champion of the entire ACC?

East had a good record versus ACC last year. The East is compares favorably to any division in the country not named the SEC West.

Well, it was just last year. Not sure how to compare the future yet but the East will be better this year.

NCAA doesnt want to hamstring its big money maker, the SEC

May 1, 2012, 7:05 PM

Its all about money. Thats the bottom line. If Ohio St slips then Wisc, Neb, Mich, or Mich St step up. When USC slipped then Oregon and Stanford stepped up. That was fine with the NCAA, but they need to have that power conference and thats why the SEC doesnt get touched. I also wonder how much pull ESPN has on what the NCAA does. It would kill ESPN TV contracts if the SEC slipped. I think we'd be surprised by what kind of deal making goes on behind closed doors?

I think you may be surprised at how little money and influence the NCAA garners from college football. If this were basketball or some other Olymic sport you may have a point. The NCAA's primary revenue source is the NCAA basketball tourney, at least from what I have read.

It appears the big money conferences football programs work under NCAA rules on purely a voluntary basis and the superconferences could easily bolt to form some other governing body for college football. Some of you younger guys ought to do a search for how the CFA got started. The NCAA had some rules on TV exposure for football so, after a ruling by the Supreme Court, a bunch of teams formed the CFA to allow for more television exposure.
