5 reasons the Browns would be crazy to draft Deshaun Watson No. 1 overall
By: Steven Ruiz | January 10, 2017 1:06 pm After that performance, on that stage, against that defense, Deshaun Watson may have played his way into being the top pick of the 2017 NFL draft, which just so happens to be owned by the Cleveland Browns, who haven’t had a quarterback for about four decades now. Seems like the perfect fit, right?
Not quite, and we’re here to tell you why. Here are five reasons the Browns should pass up on the Clemson star…
1. Watson has too many flaws as a passer
Inconsistent accuracy. Below-average pocket presence. Questionable decision-making. Those are all phrases you’ll find on Watson’s scouting reports, which is a concern considering those are the foundations of the quarterback position. With the right coaching, Watson could be developed into a star, but there is a risk in taking him with such a high pick, and this Browns office has wisely avoided such risks thus far.
2. Myles Garrett is really freaking good
There are no once-and-a-lifetime quarterback prospects in this class, but there is one at defensive end: Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett, who racked up 8.5 sacks and lived in opponents’ backfields all season long. He has the production, and, oh man, does he have the look.
Garrett stands at 6-foot-5 and weighs 275 pounds, yet he moves like a wide receiver. He’s as close to a sure thing as there is in this draft, and the Browns need plenty of defensive talent.
3. It’s still too early for the Browns to look for a quarterback
If the Browns front office was as desperate to find its QB of the future as everyone just assumes it is, Carson Wentz would be in brown and orange right now. Cleveland is holding out for the right guy and waiting until they have a competent supporting cast in place to really start their search.
With the current state of quarterback contracts, that’s the smart way to do it. Build up a good enough team where a young QB could come in and thrive on a cheap salary is the best way to build an NFL winner. You get five years of a team-friendly deal before you have to shell out the big-money extension that kills your cap. The Cowboys are the latest example of a team using this strategy, only they are stuck paying Tony Romo a lot of money to sit on the bench.
4. Cody Kessler did not look all that bad in 2016
Kessler was very much a Hue Jackson pick. After the 2016 draft, he told the media to trust him on this one, so he won’t be in a hurry to find a replacement for the USC product. Kessler may not have the arm strength to ever develop into a top-shelf NFL quarterback, but he could, one day, turn into an above average starter who is capable of leading a team to the playoffs (think Alex Smith). Also, he totally outplayed Wentz last season and nobody noticed.
5. Watson isn’t even the best QB prospect in the draft
If I’m taking a quarterback high in this draft, it’s going to be Notre Dame’s DeShone Kizer. Watson is too unpolished. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky is inexperienced and inconsistent. Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes will have a hard time transitioning to an NFL offense.
Kizer is the best bet out of the group to develop into a Pro Bowl quarterback. He’s shown good presence in the pocket (the most important attribute for a young QB), great arm strength and solid accuracy. As long he checks out in interviews, he’ll end up as the top quarterback taken.

The Browns are so bad even Watson would struggle some there.

Tier 5, barely above Kiser? Worst throw of the week? Generally crapping on anything done in the two weeks mentioned.
There seems to be some serious Einhorn/Finkle type animosity going on here.

He was ONE for FOUR in his college picks last week and that wasn't even counting the spread which would have made him ZERO for four.

pretty questionable to flat out absurd.
I still don't really understand the Miles Garrett hype. Not that he was a terrible #1 overall pick, but this talk of him being some kind of can't-miss, generational, transcendent-type talent. I never saw that at all. I think he's got decent bust potential.
Also, pointing out all of Watson's flaws while simultaneously championing Kizer is pretty hilarious.

"this Browns office has wisely," is something that can NEVER be written in a legitimate article.
Secondly, "There are no once-and-a-lifetime quarterback prospects in this class." Is this really a TNet troll? Once and a lifetime? Grade of slaw? I'm not sure how to take that one. The DeVry journalism school just shakes its head.

most part, made good decisions so far. I'm trying to give them the benefit of the doubt so far. While the opinions of this guy in his article are mostly terrible, i don't necessarily think passing on a 1st round QB and then picking up Kizer pretty cheaply in the 2nd round was a bad move by Cleveland. Sure they didn't get one of the top prospects (despite this guy's claims), but they did get a guy with some potential without give up much for him (52nd pick in the draft). If he pans out for them that's a big bonus.
The one thing that this guy said that wasn't stupid was his 3rd point. Cleveland probably isn't ready for their franchise QB just yet. A fairly successful model recently in the NFL has been to assemble a solid team, then draft a really good QB (easier said than done, i know) and make a strong push for 3-4 years while the QB is still on his rookie deal and not taking a $20+ million bite out of the salary cap. Once these QB's get paid the team usually starts to fall apart around them because there's just no way to keep all of the key pieces in place within the cap.
