The potential problems with a 4 team playoff...

Jun 4, 2012, 12:47 PM

If you go to a conference championship model, 1 of the big 5 champs is going to get left out.

However, if you go to the top 4 model, you have some schools with a voting power (coaches ballot) and some without (i.e. Spurrier has a vote, Dabo does not).

Neither system is going to be fair, and is the reason why this system has failed before it even starts.

An 8 team playoff, with 5 AQ spots and 3 at large bids is the only feasible way to go. You keep all of the existing bowls (Rose, Orange, Fiesta, Sugar) and then the winners of those games, move on into the 4 team playoff.

It's going to be a beauty contest.***

where I saw this, but the beauty of the basketball tourney is that there can be some sort of Cinderella story each year, even if it doesn't pan out. The argument "it's what the fans want" is slightly misleading - I think fans want to see their team in the running just as much as good teams playing. It's more exciting to have the potential for upsets, AND it's a model that would last. If power is cyclical, will SEC not mind being left out when their time runs out?

Clemson

and so it begins

we wanted at least a +1 and their giving a 4 team playoff and already the complaining starts. BB has like 67 teams now and there's still bitching. We go to 8 and the 9th team will complain their schedule was better than so and so. Bitching about playoffs is a sport unto itself.

I'm just glad we'll have some sort of playoff.

I doubt it stays at 4 for long anyway

Too much money to be made.

5 power conferences? You left the ACC out i guess. No way they are going to 8 teams now. It will be 4 for now ,and it will take time fore everyone to see that 8 is better. I do not like anything that would put a conference champ over a more deserving team record and strength wise.

8 team playoff stabilizes all the conferences IMO, makes ALOT more money, keeps everybody happy, is the most logical course of action and makes the most sense.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean they will do it. :-/

Gotta save the "student athlete" from those two final teams from playing that extra game. Let's just ignore that they already do it in the FCS, b/c those kids are different and don't matter as much. :(

The hyprocricy is mind numbing.

As Spurrier said, we'll enjoy a 4 team playoff until we go to 8 teams, which we will after about 5 years. Then we'll enjoy that even more.

Amen Brother!

The 3 wildcards takes care of the argument of deserving teams that did not win thier Conference but worth a playoff spot because of record/strength of schedule (ie second place SEC)
