No SEC bias for ESPiN?

Nov 10, 2018, 10:55 AM

ESPiN's playoff predictor gives LSU a 2.4% chance of making the playoff. Can anybody give me a scenario, regardless of how ridiculous, where LSU makes the playoff?

The only one I can think of

is that Yellowstone blows up and destroys all colleges north of Baton Rouge.

I did say "regardless of how ridiculous". I guess I need to learn to think outside the box a little better.

I won't deny that certain ESPN's personalities have an SEC bias as well as a few having a Big Ten bias, but I don't think the ESPN FPI has a bias since it is based specifically off of numbers that do not include rankings.

LSU has almost no chance to make the playoff, but it's still statistically possible given the right circumstances. They would have to win out as well as Bama losing their 3 remaining conference games. LSU would have to beat UGA in the SEC Championship in this scenario.

If all that were to miraculously happen, they would also need Michigan to lose to Ohio State and Ohio State to lose to Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship. WVU and OU would have to go 1-1 in their two matchups in the regular season and the Big 12 Championship. Washington State would have to lose to Washington.

Notre Dame could also lose a couple, but it wouldn't be absolutely necessary if all the other things played out.

I don't know how the FPI works and so I am not arguing rankings. I agree that the SEC is the best conference. The problem with your scenario is, that even if Alabama loses out and LSU wins out, LSU still does not make the SEC championship. Yellowstone blowing up might have to be the best scenario for LSU.

Oh I see. I looked at Bama's schedule and saw 3 SEC games remaining without noticing that one of those is actually against UGA in the SEC Championship.

That would make it even more ridiculous.

I suppose Bama could win out, UGA could lose out, Michigan could lose to Ohio State, Ohio State could lose to Northwestern, WVU and OU could both lose another game, WSU could lose another game and Notre Dame could lose a couple more.

That would end up with Bama, Clem, possibly UCF and then possibly LSU.

You're right, it seems like it should be less than 2 percent.

remember in 2007 a 2 loss LSU made

The BCS championship, so they even made the final 2 back then because everyone choked in the final week
