The oil boom....$$$$

Dec 11, 2019, 2:44 PM

Talked to a buddy who is taking a temporary position in one of the New Mexico oil fields. It’s pretty staggering how much money is in these projects.

“His” field currently employs 100k+. The starting wages equate to $110k a year, with management making $300k. Every early 20-something has an $80k truck, and I’m guessing the town hookers do quite well. They’re anticipating adding 15,000 more employees next year.

Not posting this for political reasons, I just found it interesting. The monthly payroll alone is a staggering sum of money.

Well known in fracking states like SD.

This is a pretty recent boom in NM. Oil just picked back up.

Six weeks of it was enough for a lifetime. There are some awesome places in New Mexico, lightly sprinkled on top of a huge glob of desert nothingness.

It's depressing. It never ceased to amaze me that the price of gas was easily double that of what it was in Rock Hill at the time, yet I could watch rigs pumping oil out of the ground while I was filling up the gas tank on my rental car there. I was based out of Artesia, NM where the biggest industry in town was a refinery, and everything smelled like chemicals all the time. It's downright appetizing when you go out to eat.

The other thing that was a little shocking were the Apache casinos. They're supposed to be money makers for the tribe, but 99% of the people I saw spending what looked like the last quarters to their names WERE Apache. I've never been asked so many times in one place if I had a cigarette I could spare as inside an Apache casino in New Mexico. And if you ever drove by the reservation, it made you think just how easy the people living in third world sub-Saharan Africa actually have it.

There are some gorgeous places there, but the level of poverty in that state is an absolutely stunning thing to see in person. It's the only place I've ever seen a Burger King and Ford dealership in a town shuttered and abandoned. I heard on the news one night in my hotel room that 11 of 33 counties did not have a dentist living in the county. High schools were shutting down during the school year because people were moving out at an alarming rate and they couldn't afford to keep them open.

Maybe things have gotten better there, but it was literally a third world county back when I was working out there.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yep, one of the prettiest states and one of the saddest.

Dec 11, 2019, 3:30 PM

Kind of a juxtaposition seeing that much depressing poverty amongst that much natural beauty.

Dec 11, 2019, 3:43 PM

a few corporate offices were located there, but the bulk of my time was spent in the square of Roswell across to Truth Or Consequences, down to Las Cruces, and back across to Carlsbad with the Mescalero Apache reservation right smack in the middle of it all. There was no money there, and we struggled to deliver what we promised because the dolt we had hired for business development FAR over-promised the telephone company we contracted with. If I'd been on commission, I would have jumped a flight and come home after the first week. I stuck it out because I was on salary, but once I saw where the aforementioned business development dolt had relationships, I got the heck out of sales. Some of my co-workers went to areas in Kansas, Texas and Oklahoma that were only slightly better off. Needless to say...that dolt is long gone, and we've long since gotten out of those markets.

The amount of money the oil industry spends is amazing.

Dec 11, 2019, 2:54 PM

It's been a while, but years back people used to complain about Exxon's $12,293,257,104 profits. Democrats and environmentalists jumped all over them. BUT, if you look at their books, Exxon spends $100,000,000,000 a year and earns $112,293,257,104 in revenue, thereby making that profit. It's a margin of like 12-15%. Apple and Microsoft's profits are around 25-30%, and no comments. It's just staggering the money spent and made in oil. The scale is amazing.

Dec 11, 2019, 3:02 PM [ in reply to Any work from home opportunities? ]

Work (from HOME in Clover, SC) for a company based in San Francisco. Be one of the few they have working from home too, because if a company has lots of people working from home they get smart. Get paid San Francisco wages while living in Clover in a trailer down by the river. Save up, then in 20 years build a mansion somewhere and have all the hookers and blow you can #### or snort in retirement, which you can start at 50.

I think that's better said 'If the Saudi's wouldn't decrease production to increase prices.' At that point I get sorely confused.
